I don't know if the e200tool can be run in OS X, but there is nothing to be
scared of in the manufacturer mode. I have used it more than 3 times (I did
a *lot* of mucking when I first got my Sansa e280) and if you follow the
directions to the letter, you will be just fine.
That mode was designed to withstand corruption to the flash memory, which is
what you have on your hands.
