The test was *positive*. :-) I enabled the directory cache and it's not so greedy of resources. The boot time still remain unchanged (I never measured it, but the feeling is that). Navigating in the directory tree with the file browser is very fast, and the amount of free memory for the play lists is quite the same (my DAP has 64 MB of RAM, so the changes are negligible for me). And, most of all, *the HD doesn't spin any more*!!! :-D I hope that this will be useful for the bug fixing.
