Do I have a battery probem?

I am an old RockBox user -- Archos Jukebox Recorder V1.
Happy with it for almost 6 years now.
For some months I have the following problem. I play music on the JBR,
and all of a sudden it stops, displays "do you want to make a
bookmark" etc. I can cancel this, press On to resume, and it will
continue playing. Some minutes later, same thing.
It seems to me that despite the fact that the batteries are fully
charged (or sufficiently charged and charging) the JBR fails to
complete reading the next part of the song, causing it to think that
the batteries are too low and prepares for an emergency shutdown.
Could this be caused by worn-out batteries? E.g., they charge fully
but are not able anymore to (always) provide the current that the JRB
requires? Or is it a sign of something else failing? I can reproduce
this with two distinct sets of batteries.
I must admit I'm not running the most recent version of RockBox,
mainly because the version I have (2007-06-29) has never given me
reasons to complain :-).
