question about checking hard disc in player for errors

Hi list.
just in case it was a disc problem, i decided to scan the disc in my h140
for errors, however now i have run into a bit of a problem.
the disc seemed to be scanning fine, however the scan has got to 5 percent
of phase 1, this is using the windows scan disc utility by the way, and now
it seems to have stuck. the disc is making noises indicating it is being
accessed, but the percentage has stopped going up, and it has been like this
for around 40 minutes.
what should I do? I don't really want to go yanking the USB cable out and
apparrantly the cancel button has been disabled.
I have currently got the player running off the mains to avoid any nasty
surprises of battery running out.
So any help would be appreciated.
