Thanks for the suggestion, however I already thought of that. neither the scandisc or chkdsk options would work on the drive before I did the format, they both got to the bad sectors on the drive then just stuck. as for repartitioning, I also thought of that, I eventually stopped the format by terminating with the task manager, and then i used partition magic to first delete and then repartition the drive. After that the chkdsk option started to work, however what a surprise, when it got to 85 percent it again couldn't carry on.
