It is impossible to rule out the placebo effect unless you perform a
truley blind test.
If you don't trust the graphs you saw (I assume RMAA tests) then you
need to record the output of the same song in both firmwares, match
volume levels, match starting positions, and do an ABX test with the
resulting files to see if you can discern a difference.
