I expect a battery-operated preamp for just such a purpose as yours will be hard to find and expensive, but I think it will give better results. Electric guitar accessories might be one place to look. If you want to bootleg concerts, the downside is, more equipment to carry and keep track of, and be detected by security. You may want to invest in some duct tape.
