The error message you describe is from the build, not the bootloader, so
you have installed the bootloader successfully. You don't need to touch
it any more, you can leave ipodpatcher alone.

It sounds like you are doing this step wrong, and installing the latest
release build. Here's how to check for sure what build you have
installed on your ipod:

1) Connect it to your computer
2) Look in the .rockbox folder on the ipod for a file called
   rockbox-info.txt
3) Open that file in wordpad (not notepad)
4) Look for a line that says Version:
5) Current builds have a version number which look something like
   r26153-100518. The exact number can be a bit different, as new
   versions come out all the time, but as long as it looks like
   that and doesn't say 3.5.1 it's okay.

You might find it easier to put the current build on there manually if
you are having trouble using the Rockbox Utility.

1) Connect it to your computer
2) Delete the .rockbox folder
3) Download the build for your ipod from here: http://build.rockbox.org/
4) Unzip the zipfile into the root directory of the ipod
