The error sounds like the previous owner had Rockbox installed, and
only partially uninstalled it.
The error you're getting is because the there's no .rockbox directory
in the drive. You should still
be able to boot back into the original firmware by holding the Back
button |<< as you power on
the device, as described in the manual here:
From there, you should be able to hook the Sansa to your computer and
Rockbox Utility should notice it.
Install an appropriate build for your Sansa player (which you'll have
to find since you didn't tell us which
player you have), and after powering down and rebooting, Rockbox should start.
