Rockbox says it's empty because there are no audio files to play in it.
Rockbox is an audio player. It doesn't care about pictures :)
There may be a plugin which shows pictures / slideshows etc, but plugins
cannot access the voicing feature, so you can't get audio feedback about what
a plugin is doing :(

I think we need more details. Rockbox is playing an audio file, which you
cannot find on the device?
- remove the SD card
- delete the audio files (that you can find) from the player
- see if Rockbox still plays the mystery track/s
- if so, give us more details about what it's playing and how you get it to

Playing video as well is possible, but the file has to follow very strict
requirements for format and framerate etc (the processorss inside these
devices aren't powerful enough to process video on the fly, so the file must
be in the correct format to play on your player)
Video playback is also only supported by a plugin, so although you can use it,
you won't get voice feedback about what you're doing, where the controls are
