No, I assure you it doesn't work that way (and never has). If you
connect it to the computer while the ipod is off but with the hold
switch on it will boot the Apple firmware; if you connect it to the
computer while the hold switch is off it will boot Rockbox.

Plugging in the USB cable just turns on the power, the same as
pressing select; the bootloader doesn't check *why* the device got
powered on, it just looks at the hold switch to see which firmware to
boot.
