Generally I do have the hold switch engaged. However, there have been times
when I have connected the iPod to the computer with the hold switch
disengaged and it booted with Apple's firmware. There have been times that
I've turned the iPod on via the wheel with the hold switch disengaged and it
booted into Apple's firmware, as well. This is likely due to backpack
entropy.
