If Rockbox can tell the difference between "settings left at the default",
even where that default is different in a later release, and "settings which
have been set by the user", even if they explicitly set the default as their
preference. might it not be a good idea to implement default changes as:

 - existing Rockbox installations keep their previous default settings,
because that's what the user is used to

 - fresh Rockbox installations apply a new default setting, because there's
presumably some good reason for having changed the default

 - the Changelog tells existing users that the default has changed, and
explains why, so they can consider adjusting their preference
