I have a clip zip running fine with rb 3.13 since it was released. I guess something is wrong in your settings.
As with many players the only two things which may terminate its life are the battery life and the headphone socket. You cannot do anything about the battery. You can plug a remote cable permanently in the socket and fimly attach it so that it is the cable socket which will get looser and looser not the player's (I put a picture of this somewhere on the forum).
Oh there's a 3rd thing : I burned a clip+ using a faulty car charger. The poor thing melted but luckily the microSD survived.
About the microSD : I currently use sdhc 32Gb and xc 16 Gb. Maybe bigger cards would work but I haven't tried or read about it.
