If you're ready to splash in the 100 currency units ballpark, I would
heartily recommend FiiO X1:

You can easily get them on Ebay. Unfortunately it doesn't work with
Rockbox, but the upshot is significant: good audio quality (at least
FiiO products punch above their weight for the price point), supports
lossless formats like FLAC, and has decent UI. And it's not Apple.
The X1 is a basic entry point in the high-fidelity market. And FiiO is
a good starting point, and their products are high-quality.
