They are completley different -- At the most basic level, the X3 II has
a decent color screen, but the first-gen only has a tiny OLED screen and
a partcularly wonky button layout.

Rockbox master natively supports the 1st-gen farily well (except an easy
way to install the bootloader). There's out-of-tree code that supports
the 2nd generation (running as a Linux application on top of the stock
firmware).
