The current hardware has been running since late 2015:
* Tyan S2912-E motherboard
* Dual Opteron 2435 (2x 6c _at_ 2.6GHz)
* 32GB DDR2-667 ECC
Basically this was high-end server hardware from the 2009-2010 era.
The new(er) hardware pushes forward a couple of generations, and was
considered the upper end of mid-range when it was introduced in 2014:
* ASUS KCMA-D8 motherboard
* Dual Opteron 4386 (2x 8c _at_3.1-3.8GHz)
* 64GB DDR3-1333 ECC
Storage is all spinning rust. OS and most user data is on a ~1TB RAID1
array, Secondary storage is housed on ~9TB RAID5 array, with everything
hanging off a 3Ware 9750 RAID controller.
Basically, old motherboard comes out, new one goes in, everything else
gets hooked back up, basic smoke test, and then it goes back in the
This upgrade gains us:
* Twice the RAM with double the bandwidth
* 33% more CPU cores that are at minimum 20-45% more performant
* Lower overall power consumption (especially at lower loads)
* More than one usable PCIe slot (ie better expandability)
And of course hardware that is half a decade newer... which is the
primary reason for doing this upgrade.
Down the line the storage will be revamped too, though I expect that
will wait until the current drives show signs of distress or there's a
tangible need for more space or higher performance.
Anyway. By the time most folks read this the upgrade will be done!
