Wow, nearly any other rockboxable player will represent a massive
improvement in pretty much every metric other than the ability to act as
a paperweight. :D

Are you asking about the 'X3' model, or the 'Nano D3' model? The former
works very well indeed [1] but the latter will likely never see a port
due to severe memory limitations (the original Archos players have ~2X
the RAM, for example)

You'll need to blow away the partition table and re-format the card with
a FAT32 partition. I highly recommend using the 'gparted live' bootable
image to do this; it'll handle everything properly.
