No palette involved; we need highcolour / truecolour support,
preferably with bearable speed when running X across a network
link.

Yes it does handle colour. No MSVC is not required; not even
supported. Mingw is needed, both cygwin gcc and the mingw cross
compiler on debian work. The win32 sim is working under wine,
there are just some button glitches.
