This is not completely true. Foobar2000 _can_ use APE tags for this
(and IIRC this is the default setting) while it's also possible to use
id3v2 tags. Rockbox uses id3v2 tags, and these can be displayed by
"ordinary id3 viewers" (like id3v2). They are stored as TXXX tags
(output from id3v2 -l):
TXXX (User defined text information): (replaygain_track_gain): -7.17 dB
TXXX (User defined text information): (replaygain_track_peak): 1.057122
TXXX (User defined text information): (replaygain_album_gain): -6.53 dB
TXXX (User defined text information): (replaygain_album_peak): 1.107456
