Thanks for your help and input. I think I'm done, though...I cannot figure
out how to disassemble the next stage of the case of my player without
entirely destroying the player. And it's my primary right now, so I am not
about to break it.

It would be interesting to dump the contents of that chip, and it would also
be interesting to figure out what kind of processor this is. If this player
quits working, I'm going to have a field day. Expect to hear about it.

I love how I got so many responses to this, though. I'm not used to this
strong of a community!

I hope I get the chance to play with something else soon...time to go
shopping!
