Do we want one plugin per video codec (seems like it'd be quite awkward), a video plugin that can load other video codecs, or video integrated into the main playback system. So the plugin itself probably needs an overhaul, then various video codecs could be added and optimized independently (possibly if someone was interested, they could just chop out the mpeg codec in mpegplayer, and add support for a different video codec as a separate plugin for the time being until a multi-codec architecture exists) as well as adding support for the many container formats encountered in the wild. Subtitle support and multi-audio for videos probably goes with adding certain container formats.
