How about a project to rework the radio screen?
In its current shape it looks very basic.

A student could design a new interface for it that is a bit more visual.
Or possibly, something WPS-like could be used, for example re-use the
WPS with some radio information mapped to existing tags, say:
* title = FM preset name
* artist = info from RDS if available
* progress bar = tuned frequency, etc.
Not sure how things like a stereo indicator or RSSI indicator would fit.

This has been discussed on irc in the past under the name "WFMS" and I
vaguely remember someone saying some experiments have already been done,
but don't remember exactly who.

This may be not enough work to fill a full GSoC, but maybe it can be
combined with other radio work, like cleaning up the current radio code,
or investigating RDS support (IIRC, n1s told me his beast has a Si4701
RDS capable FM chip).

Kind regards,
Bertrik
