I don't think they should fail to apply. And if, it should not be hard
to manually apply them, as they don't go deep into the source. The
patches can be found here:
http://svn.rockbox.org/viewvc.cgi/www/gcc/


Sadly, your codec performance comparison isn't really meaningful if not
even your "recommended" compiler version (4.0.3) doesn't have the
patches applied.
