The conclusion seems to be that this is a bug in Apple's bootloader code - ipod users have also reported it without Rockbox installed. The difference is that Rockbox always performs a real power-off, whereas the Apple firmware just enters a low-power sleep mode, and then performs a real power-off after a certain number of days of uninterrupted sleep.
