I believe the point is not so much knowing that you reached the end of
the list, but rather that you've overshot the thing you're looking for
while scrolling through to a point in the middle. there's no speech
feedback while scrolling (which wouldn't be of much use anyway due to
latency). Finding stuff in the middle of lists is a bit hit and miss,
unless you're single-tapping the up/down arrow and listening for each
file, a strategy which is fine when you're fairly close to the thing
your searching for or if you're just browsing, but which is not very
efficient when you are after something in particular and you are in a
big directory listing. Having a precise beep would allow guessing the
length of time to hold the button down in order to land near the thing
you are looking for on the second time round.

Incidentally, searching for a particular subdirectory/file buried in a
directory somewhere is much easier on the iriver H1xx/3xx players with
the LCD remote since one of the buttons allows you to skip through the
list a bunch of tracks at a time.
