I am with you. The minority grows up :) I would welcome possibility of persistent speed up
setting not just for audiobooks but for podcasts and radio programme recordings too.

This solution is a nice feature and I would like it but unfortunately it does not solve
the problem for podcasts and radio recordings which are usually started from the beginning
and only sometimes resumed from bookmark (or last played position).
I would like to bring the question of per-directory (partial) configuration here again :)
Per-directory configuration would solve many problems with audiobooks, podcasts,
language lessons etc. which require different settings than music.
Examples of some settings which could be required to be different per directory:
- playback speed up
- dynamic range compressor
- skip length
- last.fm logging
- hotkey setting
- quick screen
