The purpose is to port it to *OS platforms* so that it runs on any machine the OS runs on. And it's not realistic that there will be an OS which defaults to running on charcell display devices (and exposes an API for that) But OTOH there wasn't even a case where HAVE_LCD_CHARCELL was involved, I just added it as example.
