This is patently not true. If chronological order were the only purpose, there would be no reason not to just use the release date, much like Ubuntu. Version numbers are for whatever the project decides they're for - Rockbox decided to use a Major.Minor system to indicate more than just chronological order. Increasing release numbers indicate chronological order, but changes in the Major release number will also indicate significant functional changes. Is there some reason why "marketing" as you put it is bad? Do we not want to have such an additional channel of communication with our user base?
