I think we had only one release where we actually used* RC builds. And
yes, IIRC there was a relatively high participation.

*With using I mean actively advertising them, not only loading them up
somewhere in the hope the users find them. And having release notes up
in time so the users have an idea what to look after.

Anyway, even if they don't bring immediate enlightenment. They still
mean basically free testing by a lot more people than the currently
active developers.
