My current top level has Music, Audiobooks, and Podcasts as the three main folders. And it still bears the problem - if I want to generally resume audiobooks, but when I've queued up several chapters *not* resume later chapters, how do I avoid this? I really don't see what this has to make it more desirable than "auto resume first file selected, plus a possible queue-for-resume option." It seems to keep the real disadvantages of auto-resume within playlists. It takes away the necessity of one configuration option, but doesn't remove the need to either determine whether you resume all files in a playlist, or only the first, or have keep that option around.
