That makes it hard, for example, to separate audiobooks and podcasts. Or
other spoken word (radio shows or audio performances).

My current top level has Music, Audiobooks, and Podcasts as the three
main folders.

And it still bears the problem - if I want to generally resume
audiobooks, but when I've queued up several chapters *not* resume later
chapters, how do I avoid this?

I really don't see what this has to make it more desirable than "auto
resume first file selected, plus a possible queue-for-resume option." It
seems to keep the real disadvantages of auto-resume within playlists. It
takes away the necessity of one configuration option, but doesn't remove
the need to either determine whether you resume all files in a playlist,
or only the first, or have keep that option around.
