I would start with tcctool as it should enable you to experiment with code on the device without risking any damage to it. Once that is working, I would start on writing basic drivers (or adapting existing TCC drivers from other devices) for things like display, buttons, storage.

That said, I haven't worked on any TCC devices, so perhaps someone here can give you more specific advice.
