An always-on, networked set top box isn't the usecase Rockbox is
intended for.

Rockbox has the same problem; you need a way to get new code onto the
system. Once you have that, then it would be pretty easy to just run the
SDL port of rockbox as an application on top of the existing Linux
environment.

For native ports, this is what you're looking at:

But for this particular device, you're probably better off using
something like Squeezelite in conjunction with what is now called the
Lyrion Music Server.
