Trying to play them also causes RB to crash. The CVS for either 8/26 or 8/27 inserted a fix, but it doesn't seem to deal with this issue.

Here's what I mean: "26 Aug 10:45 Miika Pekkarinen apps/metadata.c 1.48 Prevent an endless loop in some m4a files (looks like a crash when initializing tagcache)." - this fix doesn't help.

Additional comments about closing:  There\'s been a lot of improvements to MP4/M4A support lately. Open a new task if there are still some problems left.

That fix was not for playing the files, but for inserting them into the Tag Database. So you can insert them into the database, but just not listen to them :)

I belive there is a patch on the tracker somewhere which attempts to fix up the playback of .m4a files, but I don't know how effective it actually is.

maybe you're referring to this (Improved MP4 metadata parser). I'm using it in a custom build (iPod 5G) but since I haven't encoded any mp4's yet, I can't verify effectiveness, effeciency, validity of the patch.
