9260BugsApplicationsVery Lowr18234 - core + plugins shouldnt be calling opendir() d...2008-08-10Jonathan Gordon2008-08-10 Task Description

Only filetree.c should be allowed to call opendir(), anything that needs to recursively scan directories should be calling ft_load() which can smartly open, scan and close a directory.

The problem with this is that the filename buffer could get corrupted easily if its misused.

as of r18234 the following is using opendir() in the core
filetree.c:133: dir = opendir(c→currdir); ← not recursive
filetree.c:257: dir = opendir(tempdir); ← in ft_load() so ok
filetree.c:259: dir = opendir(c→currdir); ← “” “” “” misc.c:164: dir = opendir(pathlen ? buffer : “/”);
misc.c:1059: dir = opendir(BOOTDIR);
misc.c:1142: DIR* d = opendir(path);
onplay.c:466: dir = opendir(dirname);
onplay.c:817: srcdir = opendir(src);
tagcache.c:4075: dir = opendir(dirname);

the tagcache and the onplay.c ones are dangerous… the 3 in misc.c are not recursive so safe.

the following are uses in plugins, havnt checked them so I only know for sure that stats, disktidy and properties are unsafe
plugins/disktidy.c:203: dir = rb→opendir(name);
plugins/disktidy.c:270: dir = rb→opendir(name);
plugins/md5sum.c:78: dir = rb→opendir( path );
plugins/md5sum.c:113: DIR *dir = rb→opendir( newpath );
plugins/md5sum.c:209: dir = rb→opendir( arg );
plugins/properties.c:79: dir = rb→opendir(tstr);
plugins/properties.c:151: dir = rb→opendir(dps→dirname);
plugins/properties.c:276: dir = rb→opendir(str_dirname);
plugins/random_folder_advance_config.c:70: dir = rb→opendir(fullpath);
plugins/random_folder_advance_config.c:165: dir_check = rb→opendir(formatted_line);
plugins/rockpaint.c:740: d = rb→opendir( bbuf );
plugins/rockpaint.c:754: d = rb→opendir( “/” );
plugins/rockpaint.c:915: d = rb→opendir( FONT_DIR “/” );
plugins/sokoban.c:925: if(!(dir = rb→opendir(dirname)))
plugins/stats.c:139: dir = rb→opendir(fullpath);
plugins/test_codec.c:763: dir = rb→opendir(dirpath);
plugins/test_disk.c:356: dir = rb→opendir(testbasedir);
plugins/test_disk.c:359: rb→splash(HZ, “opendir() failed.”);
plugins/test_disk.c:421: if 1) == NULL)
plugins/wavrecord.c:3774: if 2) == NULL)

so,
The bad calls in the core should be changed to use ft_load, and the plugins should either get a new function in the lib to grab some ram and manage the whole thing, or maybe its safe to just call ft_load there also?

or alternatively, we can go on ignoring the issue.

1) dir = rb→opendir(testbasedir
2) dir = rb→opendir(recbasedir
9295PatchesBattery/ChargingVery LowCharger detection for iPod 2G (and 1G?)2008-08-18Mark Fawcus2008-08-181 Task Description

This patch adds detection of the charger connection. Not tested on a 1G, but should work if the ipodlinux GPIO documentation is correct.

NOTE: 'Charging' is not detected, just the presence of external power. See http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=18196.0 for forum topic.

11755BugsBattery/ChargingVery LowBattery reports 0% charge even after fully charged in R...2010-11-13Andy Smith2010-11-13 Task Description

URGENT/HIGH PRIORITY: Rockbox Firmware 3.7 installed with iRiver H300 1.29J.

Charging when in Rockbox mode (player switched on):

When Rockbox is running and the charger is plugged in, Rockbox can be seen charging the battery in the top left hand corner. When it is fully charged, it shows a full battery.

Charging when iRiver is powered off (player switched off):

When the charger is plugged in, the iRiver begins charging in Original Firmware mode. This is okay as the player charges correctly until Complete.

Booting into OF mode, shows a full battery charge so I can be sure it is fully charged.

However, boot back into Rockbox mode and Rockbox seems to be misreporting the battery charge as depleted - I say misreporting because at this point I know it is actually full/complete. (Booting back into OF mode would also confirm again at this point that there is indeed a full battery charge).

But run Rockbox 3.7 and after a few minutes, a false message - "Low Battery - Shutting Down" appears, after which Rockbox powers off.

I know this is inccorect, because if the battery was so low in OF, the iRiver OF would not even allow you to attempt to power back on (instead it would display a "Low Battery" picture on the display), but I can boot back into OF mode easily with no problems even after this message from Rockbox, again the OF shows a full battery and I can run it for hours with no problem so I know somewhere here there must be a miscommunication/misreading from the battery charge to the Rockbox 3.7 firmware.

Have tested this a number of times to ensure it is a fault and yes it presents itself everytime.

12808BugsBattery/ChargingVery Low[WIP] New vgm streamed music plugin powered by vgmstrea...2013-01-25Mauricio Garrido2013-01-251 Task Description

Hi there,

  this is another WIP plugin that I wrote last year. It plays videogame streamed music
  using the UADE library. Original homepage here: sourceforge.net/projects/vgmstream/
  I'm a bit new to git so please forgive me for not uploading a proper patch.
  To test the plugin, simply copy the rockstream folder to the plugins folder in
  rockbox sources. And you have to extract the data.zip file in the .rockbox folder.
  The formats.db found in data.zip is basically a list with all vgmstream supported
  extensions (at least "all" by the time I wrote the plugin). You can add or remove
  new or unwanted extensions there. The plugin will only handle the extensions found
  in the formats.db.
  Currently the plugin works as a viewer plugin, and there is only one extension associated
  with the plugin in viewers.config for testing purposes, but you can always use the
  'open with' option from rockbox. Once you open a file the plugin will parse all supported
  files found in the same folder.
  The vgmstream project is updated quite often, if someone wants to
  update the core library, I believe that would be very easy, since I only changed a couple
  of things to it.
  I'm not going to work on this anymore, so I decided to upload it here, and hope someone
  can make a proper patch and maybe some dev would be interested in testing it, make
  the necessary changes and upload an stable release.
  As a last comment, I have only tested the plugin in the simulator, samsungypr0, fuze+
  and ipod nano. It only worked in the simulator and samsungypr0, so hope someone can
  fix that.
  Please read the README file for some additional info about the plugin.
  Working on:  simulator and samsungypr0

13050BugsBattery/ChargingVery Lowclip+ freezes when charging from PC with SD mounted2015-06-19Fernando Torres2015-06-19 Task Description

First, thanks for existing …

I just bought a 8GB Sansa Clip+ and had issues when trying to listen 24 bit Flacs, which was instantly solved using RockBox. Well, the issue I’d like to report is that it freezes when I plug it into my Mac while having the SD card on it; to avoid this I have to remove the SD card, but this is kind of unconfortable.

Any advise?

Thanks in advance

When playing a sequence of two songs Rockbox on my HTC Desire S always crashes. I first had r30576-110921, and now it is r31516-120102. Cropped versions of the songs can be downloaded here:

http://www.vlado-do.de/rockbox/01_Wenn_die_Nacht_am_tiefsten_03m_08s_09h__03m_23s_22h.ogg http://www.vlado-do.de/rockbox/02_Wir_m%C3%BCssen_hier_raus_00m_00s__00m_28s_82h.ogg

They still reproducably crash my Rockbox. I found a workaround, though: mp3 versions of the same songs play all right. Rockbox for me still is the only known way to have gapless playback on my phone. Thanks for that guys!

Buy the way: the same ogg files made no problem in Rockbox on my old iPod nano.

Please refer to forum post for full exchange: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,52518.0.html

In summary playing ALAC will crash the unit, other codecs not as much. My reasoning is (as contained in the forum post):

Converting some of my ALAC collection to FLAC to test has given excellent results = no crashes. I am suspicious of the ALAC decoder; watching the VIEW BUFFERING THREAD there seems to be consistency:

OGG/MP3/FLAC/WAV: CPU Frequency goes up to 124 until pcm: becomes full, then drops to 45mhz and pcm: hovers (it is always active) near the top of 100%. Upon track change the cycle starts again (124mhz until pcm: becomes full). I don't seem to get crashes.

ALAC: CPU Frequency goes up to 124 until pcm: becomes full, then drops to 45mhz and pcm: quickly goes down (takes about 2 seconds) to 75%, then cpu switches to 124mhz to get pcm: back up to 100%. This goes on constantly (cpu high - low cycle) while a single track/file is playing. I am now believing this cpu going up and down constantly gives me the crashes. Note on crashes: I don't know when they will happen, sometimes after a minute or two, sometime after 10 minutes , there is no pattern I can tell.

Build is r23841 and earlier.

Occasionally when I reboot to the iPod firmware, something has caused the previously unset alarm setting to be enabled and the playback mode is set to shuffle. This doesn't happen with every reboot, but does more than 50% of the time.

Steps to duplicate:

1. Disable the alarm and set the shuffle mode to "None" in the iPod firmware.
2. Reset and boot into Rockbox
3. Listen to a few tracks
4. Reboot into the iPod firmware and check the shuffle mode and alarm settings.

I can't confirm 100% yet as to the time on the alarm being reset as well, but it does seem to consistently read 6 AM - which is a bit of a shock if I've been listening in Rockbox during the day and then I reboot into the Apple firmware and dock in my iHome, expecting to sleep in late on the weekend.

12574BugsConfigurationVery Low3.10 on Clip V2 freezes when selecting another language...2012-02-02Frank Steinmetzger2012-02-021 Task Description

After a lot of trial and error I found out the following.

It appears that 3.10 on my Clip V2 writes a bad nvram.bin file. When I try to set another interface language, my Clip freezes. It does not react to input and the clock in the top line doesn’t update anymore. The FM radio kept on playing though. I haven’t tried all available settings in the menu, just the ones I occasionally use. But the problem never occurred anywhere else, just upon selecting another language.

When I delete nvram.bin, I can set a language. Then I switch the Clip off and on again, and the problem comes back.

See attached the nvram.bin which causes a freeze.

PS.: No Sansa Clip in the Player Type selection on the left.

Hello,

I am using a "SanDisk Sansa Clip+" and it seems that currently it is not possible to remove quickscreen entries when they are set, you can only overwrite them.

13226Feature RequestsConfigurationVery LowAllow for per-directory sort settings2020-07-30Ori Avtalion2020-07-30 Task Description

Rockbox’s file viewer has a global sort setting.

It would be nice to have a default global sort setting, but also persistent per-directory sort settings.

For my use-case, it makes sense for me to sort my podcast directory by date, but I wouldn’t want that to affect my music directories, which should play files sorted by name.
Whenever I wish to play music, I need to go back to the general settings, and change the sort settings. And when I’m done and wish to listen to podcasts, I have to change it again.

This patch does all the UI work needed to add a very nice folder chooser. It saves and loads the search directories from /.rockbox/database.txt.

This is only the UI change, someone else needs to figure out how to make it actually work.

The system changes to searching the entire tree below folders (so no more ignoring some folders and then looking for uningored folders.

this also uses a half done patch to make lists handle indenting, not done for the skin list but if this is actually wanted that can be easily added

12853BugsDatabaseVery LowTagnavi not parsing operators in format line conditions2013-04-14Sim K2013-04-14 Task Description

It seems that operators are discarded when used in a tagnavi.config (or tagnavi_custom.config) format line condition.

For example,

%format “fmt_abtitle” “*%s - %02d:%02d” title Lm Ls ? playcount > “0” & lastoffset == “0” %format “fmt_abtitle” “%s - %02d:%02d” title Lm Ls Now if we used “fmt_abtitle” instead of “fmt_title” in the default tagnavi file, we would expect all tracks with a playcount greater than 0 and lastoffset equal to zero to be prefixed by three asterixes (*). Instead ALL the tracks with a playcount greater than zero are prefixed, leading me to think that the & lastoffset == “0” part is discarded. If I make the following change:

%format “fmt_abtitle” “***%s - %02d:%02d” title Lm Ls ? lastoffset == “0” & playcount > “0” %format “fmt_abtitle” “%s - %02d:%02d” title Lm Ls

Now all tracks with a lastoffset equal to zero are prefixed, which again proves that the and operator was clearly ignored and unparsed.

I am having a couple of problems with Rockbox on my iRiver H140.
The first issue is that all my songs in the files folder are displaying only in the order
that they were uploaded onto the machine. If I go into the settings and choose to display
Artists in alphabetical order it doesn't have any effect! I am left to endlessly scroll through
the names or listen through the iriver player which doesn't play WAVs or FLACs so i can't access everything.
Secondly, if I start up and resume playback of an album it doesn't then allow me to access the files folder when I navigate to it. I have to then restart my player and go to files from there. If I later come out to the main menu and choose Files, or any folder for that matter, it won't open. It's really frustrating. Any ideas of a fix?

Player: iPod Video 5th Gen. (5.5)
Rockbox Release v. 3.9 downloaded/installed 06/28/2011

Accessory: Griffin iFM Radio Receiver for iPhone and iPod - has a doc connector, short cable to a "dongle" which is the FM tuner, with earphone jack on the dongle. No batteries or other power source.

Here's a link to the product's Amazon page:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ERT46W

Booting into Apple firmware
1. Turned player on with nothing plugged in, the "Radio" menu item does not show up. Plugged in the Griffin iFM, the "Radio" menu item shows up, and when I select it, I get the FM frequency and dial, I can tune it, it works. I did not have to download anything at all from the Apple iTunes store.

2. Turned player on with iFM plugged in - the "Radio" menu item shows up, and from there it all works as above.

Booting into Rockbox OS 1. Turned player on with nothing plugged in, then plugged the iFM on the dock connector, the "FM Radio" item never shows up.

2. Turned player on with iFM plugged in, still no "FM Radio" on the menu.

3. Went into System then Debug then FM Radio - got message: "HW Detected: no"

So Rockbox does not detect it at all. And there's no sense expecting that any Apple/iTunes software would do anything under Rockbox.

What's interesting is, that with the player off (under both Apple and Rockbox OS), if I only plug in the Griffin iFM to the dock connector, and do nothing else, the player turns on. So there must be some kind of hardware detection there.

Actual behavior:

1. FM Tuner option never shows up on main menu (whether powering up with FM Tuner plugged in, or plugging in after power up).

2. When player is OFF, connecting the FM Tuner to the dock port turns on the player.

3. In System/Debug/FM Tuner, "HW Detected" is always "no"

Expected behavior:
1. Expected the FM Tuner option to be available on the main menu (at least when booting with the accessory plugged in to the dock port) as described in the manual.

2. Expecting to be able to tune in to FM stations and play at least through the tuner's headphones connector, if not through the player's headphones connector. Other features (displaying song information, presets, etc.) are secondary (to me).

12771BugsFM TunerVery LowFMS display problem when using themes that exhibit radi...2012-10-19Terry Layton2012-10-194 Task Description

Device: Sansa Fuze v2 (stable port)
Rockbox Release: 3.12

Recently I have been noticing a problem with themes that allow radio station logos to be displayed on the FMS screen. This is most noticeable with the analog and Fuzemod themes. While the logo displays properly, other images on the screen do not. In the case of the analog theme, the VU meter appears corrupted and with the Fuzemod theme the battery animation, tuning bar slider and playmode indicator icons fail to appear as expected. This problem was not present when either of these themes was used with the releases before version 3.12. In fact this bug appears to have been introduced by one of the experimental daily development builds either in May or June. I have tried different sets of radio station logos and preset lists with these themes but I always get the same result when using version 3.12; everything is fine with any previous release. Since this problem occurs with two different themes along with any combination of radio station logos and preset lists, I can only conclude that it originates with the firmware.

I have attached to this report three generic radio station logos in bitmap format along with a generic preset list. You can put these into /.rockbox/fmpresets and try your own tests. Since the frequencies were selected at random, don’t expect them to tune in anything. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the ability of the Rockbox firmware to tune in radio stations or play their music. The problem starts as soon as the user starts flipping through the station presets, so don’t be shy about changing the station frequently during your tests. I also find that in order to accurately reproduce this problem the Sansa Fuze v2 should be powered off then on again whenever a new theme or preset list is loaded.

13161BugsFM TunerVery LowiPod FM Remote not working2018-07-29 Henk2018-07-29 Task Description

I have an iPod 4G Grayscale (model A1059) running Rockbox 3.14 with an Apple FM remote (model A1187). The remote part works ok (Play/Select and Fwd/Rev buttons work - volume control is separate due to it being connected to the line out, but works).

However, the radio menu does not show up in the main menu when connected. Not when I boot with the remote connected, not when I connect it after booting, and not if I go to a different menu and then back.

In the debugging menu, it simply says that the FM tuner hardware is not found.

I am sure that this used to work at some point. Are there known regressions?

I’m adding this font because:
1. Currently there is no good Chinese font for Rockbox.
2. The best Chinese font (unifont) has unevenly sized Chinese characters, while this font has uniformly sized Chinese characters.

The attachments contain screenshots of the simulator, to show how this font would look like on the iPod Nano. I’ve also attached a screenshot using the Unifont font to show the uneven sizes of Chinese characters, for comparison. I don’t know about other languages, but I’d think other CJK languages work better in this font as well, due to the merging of WenQuanYi Bitmap Song.

According to the project[3], this font is made by combining the GNU Unifont (GPL), WenQuanYi Bitmap Song (GPL) and Fixed-16×8 (Public Domain) fonts. The maintainer of GNU Unifont also acknowledges this fact at [4].

This font is licensed under the GPLv2 with a font embedding exception[3]:

** GPL v2 license with font embedding exception:

font, and embed this font or unaltered portions of this font into
the document, this font does not by itself cause the resulting
document to be covered by the GNU General Public License. This

document might be covered by the GNU General Public License. If you
modify this font, you may extend this exception to your version of
the font, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to
do so, delete this exception statement from your version.
[/quote]

I don’t mind either way, but it would be up to Rockbox developers whether to strip off this exception. And either way, the font is compatible with Rockbox’s license (GPLv2).

The font I’m attaching is a modified version (and only the bdf); you can download the original version from [5]. My modification is:

This is because convbdf will emit a warning “Warning: DWIDTH spec > max FONTBOUNDINGBOX” when converting the font. This is because there are actually 46444 STARTCHAR entries, but only 46443 glyphs – the character “mu” is encoded as 181 and 956, with the exact same glyph. The generated .fnt file is exactly the same with or without my modification.

Additionally, this font is quite big so it’s a bit big on the screen of the iPod Nano. But it would be great on larger screens. Please take a look at the screenshots in the attachments.

9060PatchesFont/charsetVery LowWenQuanYi Bitmap Song fonts2008-05-31William Poetra Yoga Hadisoeseno2008-05-3114 Task Description

This font is part of the WenQuanYi Project at [1]. It’s in Chinese, but there’s an english page at [2]. This font is similar to the WenQuanYi Unibit font (FS#9059) and focuses mostly on ASCII and CJK, but I’m also posting this font for inclusion because this one has different point sizes, like for example the nimbus, Sazanami and ProFont fonts already included in Rockbox. With the different point sizes, especially lower point sizes, this font is great for small screens such as my iPod Nano.

I’m attaching some screenshots of this font under various point sizes and weights. I’ve also taken screenshots with the simulator to show how it would look like in Rockbox.

Additionally, this font is available from the original website at [3]. There is also an online README file at [4]. The source BDF files are available from the project’s SourceForge page at [5], and the BDF files I’m attaching come from the source package at [6].

According to the project[4], this font is a derivation of older free fonts and enhanced with bitmaps made by online users. As such, it is licensed under the GPLv2 with a font embedding exception[4]:

11361PatchesLanguageVery LowAdd string "Disc" for multidisc albums in WPS2010-06-06Hinrik Örn Sigurðsson2010-06-061 Task Description

This adds the translatable string LANG_DISC for display in WPS themes. E.g. a theme could use the following to show “Disc 2” for a multidisc album:

%?ik<%Sx|Disc| %ik|>

Disc is a 4 or 5 letter word in most languages, so it won’t add much clutter in themes which would like to make use of this. A comparable example is the “Next:” (LANG_NEXT) which is used when displaying the next track in a playlist.

11803PatchesLanguageVery LowPatch to add basic support for SVox Pico when building ...2010-12-10Kyle2010-12-101 Task Description

This patch applies to the tools used to generate voice files and talk clips. It adds basic support for the free SVox Pico speech synthesizer, which is the default speech system on Android phones, and is also available on Linux and Windows. Support for this synthesizer is very basic, because the pico2wave utility used to generate wav files of synthesized speech lacks the ability to set speed, pitch, volume, etc. This patch has so far only been tested for English, although several other languages are supported by the synthesizer. Note that you will need the SVox Pico synthesizer installed on your system. On Ubuntu 10.10 and most recent Debian-based systems, installing libttspico-utils should automatically pull down the correct files. This patch hasn't been tested on Windows, but it should work if pico2wave.exe is in your path.

To build voice files using SVox Pico, apply this patch and run

tools/configure –type=AV

Then select your target from the list. The rest of the defaults should be fine, but be sure to type "p" when the script asks for the TTS engine to use. Then run

make voice

and copy the .voice file into .rockbox/langs. The next time you start Rockbox, you should hear your voice prompts spoken using SVox Pico.

To generate talk clips for filenames and directories using SVox Pico, apply the patch and run

tools/voice.pl -C -s=pico -S= -e=rbspeexenc -E= <directory you want spoken>

Your talk files will be generated recursively in the directory you specify. All _dirname.talk and .talk files that correspond to individual files will be generated, with the exception of the _dirname.talk file for the top level directory you specified.

Please test this patch and provide any feedback you have. Thanks.

11544PatchesLCDVery LowiPod Nano2G Display Vsync2010-08-15Michael Marley2010-08-151 Task Description

This patch enables display vsync on the iPod Nano 2G, currently only for the Type 1 (LDS176) display. It removes tearing and can make animation smoother. However, right now it uses an extremely CPU-unfriendly method of waiting for synchronization, which makes the display quite slow in some circumstances. I hope to implement DMA to copy the framebuffer, which should help somewhat. However, I am probably going to need some help to do this.

TheSeven gets all the credit for this patch, since he found where the Tearing Effect (vblank) signal was connected to the s5l8701 and wrote the vsync code. All I did was drop it into the display driver in the right spot.

11005PatchesManualVery LowManual: FFT plugin entry & basic conversion script2010-02-12Delyan Kratunov2010-02-122 Task Description

This is a first attempt at creating an entry for the new fft plugin. The button table was automatically generated with the attached python script.

The script takes a file (or - for stdin), looks for an #ifdef CONFIG_KEYPAD….#endif block and if it finds one (and it is relatively simple), it parses it and creates the corresponding LaTeX table.

The script is extremely simple but it does provide a good basis for further work.

11129PatchesManualVery LowMake screenshots in the manual non-floating2010-03-19Alexander Levin2010-03-191 Task Description

Screenshots in the manual are nested into a 'figure' environment, but the only purpose of this is to be able to have a caption. The floating feature of 'figure' by using the placement attribute 'H' (='Here!').

This patch makes screenshots non-floating while keeping captions below the images. This is done via the LaTeX package 'caption2'.

Placement attribute for figures is set back to the LaTeX default so that figures can really float should we need it.
