9765 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | "Beep" sounds very distorted and fuzzy. | 2009-01-06 | mike beauchamp | 2009-01-08
Task Description
After upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1, the “Beep” sound (enabled in Settings / Playback Settings / Beep Volume) now sounds very distorted and fuzzy.
It sounds this way on any setting. Strong, Moderate or Weak and with the player’s volume on any setting. It definitely sounded like a normal clean beep with 3.0
This is on an 80gb Ipod 5.5 with Rockbox r19569-081223
I’m not sure if this should be under “Music Playback”, as I don’t seem to hear the distortion and fuzziness when playing mp3’s.

9942 | Bugs | User Interface | Very Low | "First Keypress Enables Backlight Only" broken on 5G an... | 2009-02-22 | Boris Gjenero | 2009-02-24 | 2 |
Task Description
“First Keypress Enables Backlight Only” doesn’t work on the 5G iPod. For example, if that’s enabled, the backlight is off and I press next track while at the WPS, Rockbox will go to the next track.
It seems like clickwheel event(s) generated when I touch the wheel turn on the backlight. When the button is pressed, the backlight is already considered to be on and the button press performs its usual action. If I carefully hold my finger still on the clickwheel, let the backlight fade, and then carefully press a button without moving my finger on the clickwheel, I am able to turn on the backlight without causing anything else to happen.
I don’t know what to do about this. Requiring a physical button press might be annoying. Removing this option on affected targets might be okay, because it’s easy to turn on the backlight by touching the clickwheel (and that doesn’t seem to cause anything else to happen). Another possibility is to require more or specific wheel events.
I set player type to iPod 5G because that’s all I have, but I expect this problem also exists on other clickwheel iPods. This problem exists on r20079 and r20033.

12688 | Bugs | Playlists | Very Low | "Queue" sometimes results in songs being placed before ... | 2012-06-04 | Sebastian | 2012-06-14
Task Description
I have a Sansa e260 player and currently Rockbox 3.11.2 running on it. I got a shuffled playlist with all of my music in it (added to the playlist using the insert function and reshuffled afterwards). When I want to listen to one or more specific songs, I enqueue them with the queue function (in play mode select song, album etc. from database → context menu → Current playlist → Queue). This works fine in most cases but when there had already been a queue that ended the song before, the song that I want to enqueue is placed before the currently playing song (which is the first song not any more part of the former queue) instead of after it. If I use the feature "Queue next" the song, album or whatever is correctly placed after the currently playing song. After having used "Queue next" once, other songs enqueued with the "Queue" command may be also placed correctly at the end of the new queue. I believe to remember some strange behavior though when in that case the song was also incorrectly placed as described above. I tried mp3 and ogg files and the behavior was the same regardless of which file format was used. It also doesn't matter if the song is played from the player's memory or from micro SD card. As soon as the second song after the queue is playing, enqueued content is correctly placed after the currently playing song again. I have experienced this behavior for a long time now and with different Rockbox builds on my player.
To reproduce the behavior: 1. Have a reshuffled playlist (created using "Insert" command, then selecting "Playlist" → "Reshuffle" from the wps context menu) with some songs in it 2. Listen to one of these songs which is not the first or last one in the playlist 3. Enqueue a song from your database via the context menu (This song should be placed directly after the currently playing one) 4. Play the enqueued song (or a part of it) 5. Play the next song in playlist 6. Now enqueue another song (This song should now be placed directly before the currently playing song in the playlist)
I have hardly any programming experience at all but it seems to me that somehow there exists some sort of marker that indicates the end of a queue and that this marker is not erased immediately after a queue ends but "one song too late"?

Task Description
Hi, thanks a lot for all of your coding efforts, support, etc. I noticed that the WPS layout changed slightly after installing the latest dev build.
===
Problem: An unexpected indent appears in the WPS after installing the latest dev build on a Sansa Clip+. Please see attachment for an example.
Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install 3.13 with Blind theme 2. Play some tracks to see WPS 3. Upgrade to latest dev build 4. Play some tracks to see WPS 5. Problem occurs here: there’s an extra indentation after the “{current track number} / {number of tracks in playlist}” text, at the bottom-left of the screen.

Task Description
(Confirmed this in 4c6c8cd-130926, discovered in build from several weeks earlier)
If ‘Voice Menus’ are enabled, entering the Recording menu will freeze the player…usually before the entire screen is redrawn. Although I can still hear the sound the mic is picking up, the player is locked up, and removing the battery or super-long-pressing of Power is required.
During my testing, I was able to randomly get it to -not- lock up, but it was like a 1 in 50 occurance…tried all formats/sample rates/etc. When ‘Voice Menus’ is -disabled-, all formats/rates/etc work fine.
Thinking it was a problem with my config that I’ve been using for years, I tried with a clean config.cfg (well, deleted and let it regenerate), and narrowed the cause down to the spoken ‘Voice Menus’ being enabled.

12808 | Bugs | Battery/Charging | Very Low | [WIP] New vgm streamed music plugin powered by vgmstrea... | 2013-01-25 | Mauricio Garrido | 2013-01-25 | 1 |
Task Description
Hi there,
this is another WIP plugin that I wrote last year. It plays videogame streamed music
using the UADE library. Original homepage here: sourceforge.net/projects/vgmstream/
I'm a bit new to git so please forgive me for not uploading a proper patch.
To test the plugin, simply copy the rockstream folder to the plugins folder in
rockbox sources. And you have to extract the data.zip file in the .rockbox folder.
The formats.db found in data.zip is basically a list with all vgmstream supported
extensions (at least "all" by the time I wrote the plugin). You can add or remove
new or unwanted extensions there. The plugin will only handle the extensions found
in the formats.db.
Currently the plugin works as a viewer plugin, and there is only one extension associated
with the plugin in viewers.config for testing purposes, but you can always use the
'open with' option from rockbox. Once you open a file the plugin will parse all supported
files found in the same folder.
The vgmstream project is updated quite often, if someone wants to
update the core library, I believe that would be very easy, since I only changed a couple
of things to it.
I'm not going to work on this anymore, so I decided to upload it here, and hope someone
can make a proper patch and maybe some dev would be interested in testing it, make
the necessary changes and upload an stable release.
As a last comment, I have only tested the plugin in the simulator, samsungypr0, fuze+
and ipod nano. It only worked in the simulator and samsungypr0, so hope someone can
fix that.
Please read the README file for some additional info about the plugin.
Working on: simulator and samsungypr0

12891 | Bugs | Themes | Very Low | %?if() evaluates enumeration indexes and arbitrary numb... | 2013-08-22 | Guillaume Cocatre-Zilgien | 2014-01-10
Task Description
When displaying %mp in a theme while playback is stopped, the value 0 (zero) is displayed.
However, to test for “playback stopped”, one has to test: %?if(%mp, =, 1) That is, one has to test for (index + 1) in order to return true for any given enumerator index number.
Same problem when testing for an arbitrary number. Example: %?if(%ss(0, 2, %St(font), number), =, 15) returns true when the font is set to “14-Nimbus”, and false when the font is set to “15-Adobe-Helvetica”.
When testing a %tag that holds a numerical value though, it works as expected: %?if(%pv, =, 0) returns true when volume is set to 0dB.
Fixing this would likely break all existing Rockbox themes. One solution to this, would be to require new / updated themes to include some specific code that “acknowledges” the new behavior.

The test.wps reproduces the problem in the 320x480 sdl app The default font, 27-adobe, has to be selected probably. The wps works if a height, i.e. 20 in this case as the image height, is specified
Test.png shows the problem. test.zip is the small test theme.

Task Description
Using the %pL Tag (in WPS) in order to simply display it or use it in a conditional tag (like in the “analog” theme yields very high values (let call it spikes) - where they should not be, while the bar-type peak meter is working fine.
Within the simulator, everithing is running smooth, as far as I could see.
I tried to have a look at the sources but that’s too much at the moment.
Does somebody have a clue ?

Task Description
After a lot of trial and error I found out the following.
It appears that 3.10 on my Clip V2 writes a bad nvram.bin file. When I try to set another interface language, my Clip freezes. It does not react to input and the clock in the top line doesn’t update anymore. The FM radio kept on playing though. I haven’t tried all available settings in the menu, just the ones I occasionally use. But the problem never occurred anywhere else, just upon selecting another language.
When I delete nvram.bin, I can set a language. Then I switch the Clip off and on again, and the problem comes back.
See attached the nvram.bin which causes a freeze.
PS.: No Sansa Clip in the Player Type selection on the left.

I get the same behaviour regarding high speed vs. full speed mode in Windows 7, but I’m not aware of Windows reporting other USB errors anywhere.
I was sometimes having USB difficulties that seemed to be due to contact oxidization or dust from not using the dock connector in a long time, but I don’t think that’s the cause here.
I’m attaching USB traces from WireShark using Linux usbmon. In both cases I removed all the USB mass storage stuff after get max lun because it seems irrelevant and increases file size a lot. When the result is full speed, something goes wrong after the set address response. When the result is high speed, something goes wrong after the set configuration request. In both cases the first sign of trouble is an interrupt from the USB hub.
This is on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R rev V1.0 motherboard with Intel P35 + ICH9R chipset.

12817 | Bugs | Operating System/Drivers | Very Low | 6G USB Mode locks up with car but not computer. | 2013-01-29 | Russell Brown | 2013-01-29
Task Description
I’m having weird problems with a 160Gb 6G Classic (yes I know it’s unsupported/unstable).
With emcore and rockbox it works fine. Connecting it to my computer the USB works as expected and everything is great (copied 100Gb+ of music to it with no trouble).
However… when I connect it to either of my cars (via USB), the iPod shows the USB screen for a few seconds then goes back to the Rockbox menu and locks solid. It then needs a MENU+Select to reboot it.
Using a USB flash drive in both cars (different head units) works fine and I can navigate around the filesystem and play music. I did notice that the flash drive was partitioned, not ‘superfloppy’, so I setup my iPod with 1 partition and stuck rockbox on that…. didn’t make any difference though.
Someone suggested that the head units (Kenwood and OEM Jaguar) might be detecting the device as an iPod from the USB ID and then ‘doing something special’. So I compiled my own rockbox from git source changing the USB ID and VENDOR to 0001. I then verified the change by doing a lsusb on my Linux box and the ID showed as 0001:0001.
Sadly this makes zero difference to the iPod’s behaviour when connected to my car(s).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m happy to recompile, grabs logs, insert code etc

Task Description
RB does not play AC3 tracks which were extracted from DVD with splitting one-track/one-song (splitting by chapters).
In other words - if you extract single AC3 song RB will not be able to play it back, despite the fact foobar2000 and Winamp with AC3Filter plugin will play it fine.
It is not a problem related to extracting software as the problem occurs for AC3 files saved by DVD Audio Extractor and SmartRipper. (Files saved by them are bit-bit the same as file comparison showed).
Simulator does not display any debugging info when you try to play AC3 file which RB is unable to play.
AC3 playback is not completely broken because RB plays AC3 files if you extracted full AC3 track without splitting it.

On my X3, it triggers the MIPS equivalent of a segfault. (directory has 792 entries, tried to access it with only 500 allowed)
Rather than crashing outright, I think it would be better to detect this and somehow error out gracefully?

Task Description
Hello.
Can you somebody add some info about using talkclip for shortcuts.txt in manual section 5.14 Shortcuts.
I'd recommend replace this
"talkclip: <filename clip of a talk that speak When voice menus are enabled>"
for this
"talkclip: <filename clip with full path of a talk that speak When voice menus are enabled
(example /.rockbox/filename.talk)>"
I suggest this because I took a long time before I figured out how it should be properly.

Task Description
I’m using 42a725f, and after frequency scaling implementation, sometimes the player slowdown extremely, being unusable (don’t stop playing, only small gaps in audio occur). Less frequently, the player freezes.
I noticed it’s happens more frequently if the device is just powered on, and hits play. If I wait a few seconds before resuming play, the freezes are less frequent.
- How often does this happen? * Frequently, about 2 o 3 times a day (4 hour average playback time, with several shutdown/boot in the middle)
- playing which file format (mp3, ogg, flac, mpc, etc…)? * Confirmed with mp3 and flac
- which lcd is your device? *st7783

13018 | Bugs | Codecs | Very Low | ALAC playback on iPod CLassic 7G 160GB | 2014-12-18 | Luk Pe | 2020-01-10
Task Description
There is an ALAC playback problem in daily builds (since 2014-11). The playback somethimes works for one song but then crashes and shows ALAC file details as "? kbit/s", "0 MHz", "0 MB" and nothing happens when I press the Play button. After reboot the problem occurs again. It makes the ALAC playback impossible.
Now I'm using revision 9cb9f76M-140326 with patches from aroldan:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b5xbw6cp4ikfxwn/MjELjmDNJ_
With this build there are no ALAC playback problems.

Task Description
I would like to leave my player charging overnight and have it resume playback in the morning to wake me.
My player remains on when charging and cannot be turned off.
The alarm does not resume playing if the player is already on when the alarm time passes.
I suspect this probably applies to all players, mine is a Sandisk Sansa Clip+.
Rockbox info says v. 3.13 - the stable build grabbed by RockboxUtility, which this bugtracker doesn’t seem to know about yet.

10590 | Bugs | Plugins | Very Low | Aliasing when playing MIDI files on iPod 5G | 2009-09-06 | kzuse | 2012-05-16 | 3 |
Task Description
Starting from the daily build from mid August (can’t exactly say when, because I don’t play MIDIs so often), the MIDI playback on my iPod 5G 30GB sounds distorted, especially the Piano sample.
It sounds as if the higher frequencies are chopped of and instead replaced by “alias frequencies”. Maybe something has been messed up in the mixing routine concerning decimation filter / interpolation.
I am using the original patchset provided here at rockbox.org.
Maybe somebody could check this - thank you!
Keep up the great work!

Task Description
I've hunted this down here is what I found out.
from http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.Callback.html
public abstract boolean onKeyDown (int keyCode, KeyEvent event) Since: API Level 1
Called when a key down event has occurred. If you return true, you can first call KeyEvent.startTracking() to have the framework track the event through its onKeyUp(int, KeyEvent) and also call your onKeyLongPress(int, KeyEvent) if it occurs.
We need to return true and call KeyEvent.startTracking() from /android/src/org/rockbox/RockboxFramebuffer.java then set the interrupt flag from /firmware/target/hosted/button-android.c and find out what is passed back after a key release and handle that. I may not be a great programmer but this looks like the ticket to removing the BUTTON_REL work around from /firmware/target/hosted/android/app/button-application.c

12749 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Android Tablet with Froyo: Playback pauses briefly ever... | 2012-09-07 | Thomas Heuving | 2012-09-07
Task Description
On my newly purchased (but used) Archos Internet Tablet 70 250GB with Android Version 2.2.? (Froyo) I installed the daily build of rasher. Everything works so far, but playback of MP3 (mostly 160 Kbit CBR and ~200 Kbit VBR) pauses briefly every 2 to 3 minutes. I just reformatted the drive, which now has ext3 and that seems to end the pause which I got on FAT32 after ~4 Seconds of every new song, but every 3 minutes or so the playbacks stops for about a second - very annoying. Don't tried other codecs as I don't own any files other than MP3. I was in the developers menu during one of this pauses, looking at the list of the contributors. The old names fly away to the right, but this was frozen also during this one second timespan - as if the rockbox-process was paused entirely or so.

12006 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Android: OGG, SPX, MP3 playback problem | 2011-03-12 | Tuomas Airaksinen | 2011-08-12
Task Description
I’m using revision 29572 of android port. Host system is Samsung Galaxy 3 i5800, with 240×400 resolution display, with version 2.2 (Froyo) of Android.
The problem is as follows. When trying to start playback of OGG or SPX files, the playback does not start occasionally (the change is maybe less than 20% to have playback). By rewinding randomly it is possible to get it start playback. The same behaviour occurs when starting from bookmarks and from file explorer. The problem occurs with default config file.
Tried with MP3 and had the same problem. The problem may be with other codecs as well but I have not tried it so extensively.

12307 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Android: Unable to resume playback after pausing/closin... | 2011-10-01 | Leonard Jacob | 2011-10-01
Task Description
On build 30622 and previous builds, there is an issue with resuming playback.
When "Resume Playback" is selected from the menu, you transition into the music control screen but there is no output aside from some crackling noises.
Occasionally, the song would play for half a second before silencing.
The play/pause button during this situation shows a pause symbol which suggests that the song is supposed to play. However, the song progress bar remains at 0:00.
Currently on Cyanogenmod 7.1 nightly, Android version 2.3.5.

12283 | Bugs | Operating System/Drivers | Very Low | Android: yesno popup causes freeze on some situation | 2011-09-17 | Lee Kang Hyuk | 2011-09-17
Task Description
1. tested devices: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and Android 2.3.3 AVD 2. tested revision: custom r30556 and rasher's unmodified r30562
3. condition: goto home screen by pressing 'Home button', then return to rockbox
4. symptom : any action that calls yesno screen(rename, delete, or 'Erase dynamic playlist', etc) will make rockbox unresponsible. The only thing I can do is go to home screen then kill rockbox service.
5. If I go to home screen from main menu by 'Back button', the problem doesn't occur.

13122 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Annoying beeps when playing ogg vorbis files | 2017-07-04 | Jérémy Caruso | 2017-07-04
Task Description
After upgrading from 3.13 to 3.14, when playing most of the ogg vorbis files in my library, a "beeping" sound sporadically occurs.
The sound is random (2 consecutive playbacks of the same track will beep on the same time).
All the files played fine with 3.13. MP3 files play just fine (I have not tested other formats yet).
Possibly interesting facts : Vorbis files with a lower bitrate (<100kpbs) seem to be less subject to this beep. It seems beep never occurs when screen is on.

11907 | Bugs | Drivers | Very Low | Annoying flash memory access noise with Sansa Clip+ | 2011-01-26 | Gugel Bod | 2014-09-28 | 12 |
Task Description
Problem found in versions r29044-110113 to r29143-110126. I could not test 3.7.1, because it did not recognize my 16 GB Transcend flash card (fixed in above versions).
At the beginning of tracks and during rebuffering of longer tracks there is a short humming sound (like a bumblebee) mixed with a fast sequence of random high frequency tones. The sound differs as a function of data format and content. It is very homogeneous with WAV tracks (only humming) and different with lossy and lossless codecs. The same file encoded with FLAC and AAC leads to different short distortions. It is only audible for tracks with initial silence or very dynamic content, for example classical music with quiet passages or audio books. With sensitive headphones, this can be quite annoying.
The original firmware does not show this behavior!
It only happens while reading from the SD card, not from the internal storage.
Initially I thought this might be a CPU throttling issue. But now I think it might also be related to the controller driver.
There is a thread on Hydrogenaudio with independent confirmations of the issue:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=86306
If I can provide any additional information to help, please let me know.

12455 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Any EQ Low Shelf change from 0.0 causes click at start ... | 2011-12-15 | Julian Hughes | 2011-12-15 | 1 |
Task Description
Hardware: iriver H140, iriver H340, Sansa Clip+
Rockbox version: 3.10 downloaded from http://www.rockbox.org/download/byhand.cgi I have also reproduced bug on official firmwares as old as 3.5.1, and on my own builds.
Settings: 100% default except for enabling EQ and setting an EQ i.e. using graphical EQ to set LS -0.5 at 60Hz or LS +1.5 at 60Hz
Expected behaviour: music track, however loaded, starts in normal way, with no sounds other than those decoded from file. Restarting the track results in the same normal playback.
Actual behaviour: music track starts with an obvious and intrusive click. This happens whether the track is loaded individually, or if it is the first track of an album loaded via .m3u playlist. When using playlist subsequent tracks play normally, without a click. But restarting any track causes the click.
It makes no difference if the EQ Low Shelf Filter settings are a big change from flat, or a tiny difference. To induce the bug it’s enough that EQ is enabled and LS is not set to be flat i.e. just an increment of +/- 0.5 dB is enough, and changing the cut off frequency or the Q factor made no difference.
This bug is noticeable with any track that starts quietly, and especially with tracks from CDs that are not mastered to modern high levels.
The Clip does tend to make its own small click on manual track changes and some button presses; I am not confusing this with the bug I describe. On the irivers I get a single click, while on the Clip I get a very unmusical double click.
I’ve attached my H140 config to illustrate that the config is unremarkable and that apart from the EQ it is at default. If anyone needs me to try stuff or make any changes or try a patch that is fine, but I would prefer it to be on an iriver because the Sansa OF database refresh is so annoying.

Task Description
Playing APE 24/44.1 with harsh noise in different parts of the track. If you decode APE file to WAV using the codec console, then there are no problems. So the matter is in the player’s APE decoder.

12160 | Bugs | Codecs | Very Low | APE codec random loud noise during playback | 2011-06-15 | da unique | 2011-06-15
Task Description
Hardware: Clip+ 8GB using internal memory Problem: Playback of most APE files results into passages of loud noise during playback. The music is totally gone and noise is ear deafening loud. When rewinding, till music is heard, and replaying the problem part, error can be reproduced _sometimes_. In other cases it either runs fine, or the problem occurs elsewhere in the file.
Since the problem does not always occur in a specific part of a APE file, it is hard to attach a sample file.
Problem persisted between ape files encoded in high and normal setting. Using winamp + monkey audio 3.99 APE plugin, these files never shown problems.

Task Description
I have an upgraded iPod 5.5 with CF 32Gb installed in CF-ZIF adapter. Both iTunes & Rockbox are working fine with this setup.
Then I tried to increase the storage space by using mSata SSD 64 GB + mSata-ZIF adapter. iTunes recovered the iPod successfully and it is working just fine. I installed Rockbox latest stable (non-stable latest = same thing) version & after the Rockbox boot-up it reporting an ATA error -11.
I wonder if this can be solved.
Thanks!

12417 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Audio crackling problem on Fuze v2 | 2011-11-30 | Tucker Cane | 2012-07-30 | 1 |
Task Description
I have RockBox version 3.9 on my Sansa Fuze v2 and so far I love it, but I have one problem. On a few tracks in my library, when I play them, the first few minutes of the song will be strangely distorted. Most of them are songs where the music starts off in just one of the speakers before moving into the other one. There will be bursts of loud, crackly noise in the other speaker during these first few seconds (that seem to be in time with the music) and then it will fix itself and the rest of the song will play perfectly. When I boot the default Sandisk firmware the songs play perfect like they should, it is only in RockBox that this glitch happens. I’ve messed with the settings a bit and even reset them completely, but nothing has worked thus far.
Attached is one of the songs that this happens with, from about 2 seconds in to about 7 seconds in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to enjoy my music without that crap in it.

Experienced Results: I have 2 folders(lets call them FolderA and FolderB) each containing audio files. FolderA and FolderB are both on the root of my drive Neither one has a database.ignore file in it. I go to settings → general settings → database → update now All files are added to the database as expected …But i realize i dont want FolderB to show up in the database. I add a database.ignore file at /FolderB/database.ignore Then I go back in and update the database again(settings → general settings → database → update now) all of my audio files still show up in the database(including the ones in FolderB with the database.ignore file)
Expected Results: After adding the database.ignore file to FolderB and updating the database(settings → general settings → database → update now) the audio files in FolderB should no longer appear in the database
Summery: Any files in a folder containing a database.ignore file should be removed from the database on update
