8598 | Bugs | Recording | Very Low | FM Recording disk thrashing | 2008-02-12 | g | 2008-02-12 | 2 |
Task Description
When recording, as file size reaches 25.2MB and again at 52.4MB respectively, disk thrashing noise drowns out the recording for about 2 minutes. This occurs at about 27.5 minutes if recording as mp3. And about 5.25 minutes if recording as wav.
I am assuming that Rockbox is filling a cache and then dumping the file to disk all at once.
I would expect it to write quietly. Even if it where to write on the fly, the noise would be reduced to short bursts. 2 minutes of interruption is just not acceptable. I missed out on important information during those 2 minute periods.
How can we eliminate write noise altogether? Or at least in the recording itself.
Select ‘FM Radio’ Choose your station. Then from the menu select ‘Recording’ Press ‘play’ or ‘Rec’ to begin recording. Wait for file size to reach about 28MB. Then stop.
I can also provide recordings if necessary.
*note: I also had the USB cord attached to give better FM reception. tested on e260 & e280 Rockbox Version: r15988-080102
Thanks

10511 | Patches | Build environment | Very Low | Fixed multiple-language feature in tools/configure | 2009-08-11 | Rosso Maltese | 2020-07-14 | 2 |
Task Description
The patch fix the multiple-language feature, maintaining the same behaviour in interactive and batch mode and with “make reconf”. Now it’s possible to build more than one voice language at once, specifying different engine and option set for each one. So, running “make voice”, all the selected languages will be built.
To help the comprehension, here it is a batch mode sample:
../tools/configure –target=ipodvideo –ram=64 –type=av –language=italiano,espanol –tts=f,e –voice=lp_diphone –ttsopts=, –encopts=’-q 10 -c 10,-q 5 -c 5’
This is like to run:
../tools/configure –target=ipodvideo –ram=64 –type=av –language=italiano –tts=f –voice=lp_diphone –ttsopts=’ ' –encopts=’-q 10 -c 10’
../tools/configure –target=ipodvideo –ram=64 –type=av –language=espanol –tts=e –voice=lp_diphone –ttsopts=’ ' –encopts=’-q 5 -c 5’
In the first case, I set the language to italian, using festival with voice lp_diphone (female), no further festival options and some manual encoder options. In the second case, I set the language to spanish, using espeak. Even if I set the voice, the value is ignored, since the selected TTS engine doesn’t use it.
I also added some cosmetics, like some very circumstantial indentation, blank check in rootdir too, simpler numbered menu generation, some terser command pipes.
The patch is applied to r22250.
I don’t know if it’s a really wanted feature, but the word in the script hurt me!

Hi all,
Currently for all models, the Morse Code input method can only type lowercased letters. Here I provide a patch which enables people to switch between lower cased and upper cased letters, I implemented this for Fuze and Fuze v2, and further fixes will be provided soon (or someone else want to add some key mapping options into your keymaps?)

11877 | Bugs | Operating System/Drivers | Very Low | Filesystem corruption after entering USB mode | 2011-01-14 | sideral | 2011-04-18 | 2 |
Task Description
Various users on IRC recently reported cases of filesystem corruption. I have seen them as well, especially when using USB mode (I'm using a Sansa ClipV2, USB-enabled through FS#11664 ).
One strangeness I've experienced is that when my system has detected filesystem corruption, it is often enough to remove the player from USB and then replug it, without repairing the filesystem and without rebooting Rockbox; on the next USB mount, the filesystem is clean. This might indicate that some buffer is flushed too late for the USB host to see.
[EDIT: Removed previously attached patch, which is now tracked separately as FS#11883.]

12073 | Patches | Database | Very Low | Dynamically add files to database as they are played | 2011-04-18 | sideral | 2011-04-19 | 2 |
Task Description
These experimental patches dynamically add new tracks to the database when they are played. This allows users who (for various reasons [1]) prefer to not fully initialize the database to take advantage of database-based features such as autoresume (remember a resume position for each file), runtime statistics, or track ratings.
The current patch set is only a prototype. It's still somewhat inefficient because it does a full database commit and reload for each new track that is played.
The actual database-extension patch (patch 0002) works by refactoring tagcache_build to create a new interface, tagcache_add_file, that adds a single file to the database. This new function runs in the database thread and takes a dircache_entry pointer, which is provided by way of a Q_UPDATE event. The audio thread generates this event in tagtree_buffer_event when the initial DB lookup fails, and later checks the database again in tagtree_track_finish_event. If the DB commit and reload have succeeded in the meantime, this second lookup will succeed and the runtime information the user is interested in (stats, resume info) can be stored in the DB.
Patch 0001 changes the DB commit's buffer-allocation preference from using the dircache buffer to using the RAM DB's buffer. (This used to be the preference until r10003 reversed it, supposedly because the dircache buffer typically is bigger. I don't know yet how valid this argument is today.) This reversal avoids needlessly flushing and refilling the dircache and makes the Q_UPDATE event-passing mechanism more robust (because in-flight update events contain dircache_entry pointers, which would have to be invalidated when the dircache is flushed – which is not done yet).
Current limitations/caveats: * Requires dircache and Load-DB-to-RAM enabled (and only works on targets that include these features) * tagcache_add_file does not respect any database.[un]ignore files in the directory hierarchy above the added new file. * DB needs to be initialized to begin with. There's no UI function for a basic DB initialization (without scanning and adding all files) yet. * Not very thoroughly tested (mostly in simulator, with small file sets)
Possible improvements: * Delay committing DB changes if more track-add events are in the tagcache queue * Incremental commit: Could be optimized for add-one-track case * Incremental load_tagcache: Avoid flushing and reloading full database * Add function to initialize an empty DB
Comments welcome!
Footnote: [1] Reasons for not using the database, or not keeping it up to date, include: metadata parser instability; prefer not keep tags up to date; prefer file browser over database browser

Task Description
This patch contains several improvements to the Chopper game designed to make it run with a high framerate instead of a low, jerky one. Previously, the game depended on sleeping for a number cycles before drawing another frame, causing very jerky motion. Now the game should run at a high framerate all the time. The gameplay should be about the same, at least on targets with a display of >64px. I don’t have any of these smaller targets, so I wasn’t able to test. Please tell me what you think of my changes.

12639 | Bugs | Themes | Very Low | Certain themes cause the WPS to not load properly and U... | 2012-04-08 | Ludovic Jacques | 2013-08-15 | 2 |
Task Description
Both issues seem to appear with any version of my theme and with any build. Let's try it with the latest version 1.30 of my theme (in attachment but also here: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?themeid=1585 ) and a recent build (I use version: 0c4bd3a-120406)
-Theme loading
When you load the theme for the 1st time, the WPS will never load properly (failsafe). The workaround is to turn off the device and turn it on again and then the WPS will always load properly until you reload the theme for some reasons (trying another theme and revert back to mine etc). I tried both with the full theme version and this "light" version of WPS: http://pastie.org/3747546
-USB connection (tested on Windows 7, with or without a microSD, and there isn't such an issue with the other themes)
If I plug the USB cable while the player is on or off, it will almost never mount properly. Usually the USB screen appears on my SBS, the computer recognizes a USB device is connected but either nothing appears in "my computer" or the device appears but is not accessible. When I unplug the USB cable, the Zip gets stuck on the USB screen and only reset can turn it off. Sometimes it even displays some erros like that when plugging the USB cable: "data abort at 30FSR 0x8 (domain 0, fault address 0x964176 bt pc: 0x3006AC3 bt end" , sometimes it doesn't display the USB on SBS but gets stuck on the main menu. And rarely in the same conditions it also mounts properly…
Like for WPS, I made a "light" version of SBS without the status bar and that way the Zip seems to mount and unmout properly every time! http://pastie.org/private/cauhxelaip7hrpqpcwdbxw So maybe a tag in the status bar causes the issue with USB connection?

11031 | Bugs | Plugins | Very Low | Brickmania: Game doesn't load well | 2010-02-17 | Tomer Shalev | 2010-02-19 | 2 |
Task Description
When loading a saved Brickmania game, the game is loaded corrupted. Please see screenshot attached to see for yourself. There is one brick in the right side which is shown corrupted, and one corrupted rectangle in the left side of the screen which drops like a power object, and stays at the bottom of the screen.
This issue happens on Cowon D2 target. It doesn't happen on the D2's simulator.
Looking at the code and comparing the loading/saving function against the Bubble's game functions, I can see that the return value of file operations is not checked (I'll fix that). In Bubbles, there's a single file operation of reading/writing the game context struct. In Brickmania there are several consequent file operation to read/write each variable. Maybe the drivers doesn't handle this well on this target. A workaround for that could possibly be to join all saved variables under one game context struct as in Bubbles, but that could mask a real bug somewhere else.

9537 | Patches | Themes | Very Low | Backdrop for viewport | 2008-11-08 | John Woznack | 2009-12-18 | 2 |
Task Description
I’d like to suggest the following new WPS feature(s):
1. A viewport can be assigned an image as a “backdrop”.
a. A viewport may be assigned an image dynamically via the WPS tag "%VX<identifier>"
(i.e. %VXa for image a, %VXZ for image Z, etc.)
b. As a viewport is being processed and drawn, its backdrop would be drawn "first", followed by any other normal images/characters.
2. Viewport may define FF00FF as a background color, which would then be “transparent”. This would allow overlapping viewports.
3. Fonts drawn in a viewport with a backdrop would automatically be drawn with DRMODE_FG.
Notes on the attached patch file: + It was created from the SVN revision 18997 on Nov 3, 2008. + Although I stubbed in the new functions for all the LCD drivers, I’ve only flushed out the 16 bit driver so far.
Cheers!

12076 | Bugs | Database | Very Low | Autoresume feature can start from wrong offset due to r... | 2011-04-19 | Rob Walker | 2011-08-08 | 2 |
Task Description
I've found a problem with the new autoresume feature in 3.8. I use it when listening to podcasts and sometimes find that it resumes from near the end of a new episode - e.g. on a 30 minute podcast it will resume from 28 or 29 minutes - usually about the place where a previous epidsode finished and I skipped past the end credits.
What I think is happening is that there is some code in the database that tries to resurrect the runtime statistics for files that have been deleted and then restored - as the last offset is in this data, it is reusing the last offset from an old episode.
I've put some more logf()s in tagcache.c in build_numeric_indices(). I can see that if the filenames don't match (line 2306) it then tries to match any 2 tags out of the 3: artist, album or title. For the podcasts, the artist and album are always the same (i.e. the producer and which one of their podcasts it is), but the title is different (i.e. "Episode 100", "Episode 101", etc). So if I've listened to Episode 100 and then deleted the file, and then add Episode 102 to the player, it matches the artist and album and so resurrects the wrong data from Episode 100.
I've disabled the resurrection based on tags (just commented it out) and the problem seems to have gone away. A better fix would be to ensure that all 3 tags or matched or to ensure that title is one of the matched tags

10181 | Patches | FM Tuner | Very Low | Allow the FM region to be set from a FMR file | 2009-05-01 | Alexander Levin | 2009-05-14 | 2 |
Task Description
Since FM stations list may require that the FM region is set to a certain value, it would be good if the FM region could be set along with the station list. The patch does just that.
The region is set by putting the line “region:N” into the FMR file (at any line there). N can be one of the values allowed for the fm_region setting.
The patch does not work on the simulators for e200 and h120 (the only two I tried) because, for some reason, the symbol HAVE_RADIO_REGION is not defined for them. Could anybody tell why?
Saving the region along with the station list is not implemented.

12074 | Patches | Settings | Very Low | Add setting to enable/disable lineout on Sansa Fuze V2 | 2011-04-19 | Rob Walker | 2019-08-02 | 2 |

I'm not 100% sure that re-using the "Lineout Poweroff" setting is the right thing to do here as it's not powering on/off the line-out - just switching between headphones and line out

Task Description
This patch adds a frequency response graph below the equalizer's controls, making it an EQ that is actually "graphical".
I'm still not sure about the accuracy of the represented curve, in particular the Q factor on the peaking filters seems to have an effect opposite to the expected, though the equations are taken from the same "audio EQ cookbook" the equalizer is based on, any help is appreciated!
The user interface is still incomplete, I want to add proper tags on the axes and bars. I also thought about re-enabling the theme on this screen (why is it disabled?) and change the behavior of the "right" button, making it consistent with other menus.
Tested on a Sansa e200.

I get the same behaviour regarding high speed vs. full speed mode in Windows 7, but I’m not aware of Windows reporting other USB errors anywhere.
I was sometimes having USB difficulties that seemed to be due to contact oxidization or dust from not using the dock connector in a long time, but I don’t think that’s the cause here.
I’m attaching USB traces from WireShark using Linux usbmon. In both cases I removed all the USB mass storage stuff after get max lun because it seems irrelevant and increases file size a lot. When the result is full speed, something goes wrong after the set address response. When the result is high speed, something goes wrong after the set configuration request. In both cases the first sign of trouble is an interrupt from the USB hub.
This is on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R rev V1.0 motherboard with Intel P35 + ICH9R chipset.

Task Description
The %pb tag has a small problem. If an image is specified but no height, the tag draws the size of a line even if larger than the the image. This leads to pixel garbage below the progressbar.
The test.wps reproduces the problem in the 320x480 sdl app The default font, 27-adobe, has to be selected probably. The wps works if a height, i.e. 20 in this case as the image height, is specified
Test.png shows the problem. test.zip is the small test theme.

9942 | Bugs | User Interface | Very Low | "First Keypress Enables Backlight Only" broken on 5G an... | 2009-02-22 | Boris Gjenero | 2009-02-24 | 2 |
Task Description
“First Keypress Enables Backlight Only” doesn’t work on the 5G iPod. For example, if that’s enabled, the backlight is off and I press next track while at the WPS, Rockbox will go to the next track.
It seems like clickwheel event(s) generated when I touch the wheel turn on the backlight. When the button is pressed, the backlight is already considered to be on and the button press performs its usual action. If I carefully hold my finger still on the clickwheel, let the backlight fade, and then carefully press a button without moving my finger on the clickwheel, I am able to turn on the backlight without causing anything else to happen.
I don’t know what to do about this. Requiring a physical button press might be annoying. Removing this option on affected targets might be okay, because it’s easy to turn on the backlight by touching the clickwheel (and that doesn’t seem to cause anything else to happen). Another possibility is to require more or specific wheel events.
I set player type to iPod 5G because that’s all I have, but I expect this problem also exists on other clickwheel iPods. This problem exists on r20079 and r20033.

Task Description
I store the album art by putting a folder.jpg file in the album's directory. Any WPS on other players shows the cover pictures properly if album art is enabled in the theme.
I am aware of caveats like progressive jpgs, that are not supported by RB.
In the attached zip file, there are four directories with a folder.jpg file and a free opus file for demonstration purposes.
All pictures show up fine on my Sansa E200 (v1) using CabbieV2 or lebellium_Samsung-like. However, on my XduOO x3ii the pictures are not displayed for the examples 1 - 3, but show for example 4.
None of the jpgs are progressive and I cannot figure out a difference between 1-3 and 4.
I don't know how to debug this further myself, but would be happy doing any furter experiments.
This is true for the current dev builds, e.g. b450707955.

12047 | Bugs | User Interface | Very Low | WPS on startup doesn't work on iPod Video | 2011-04-06 | Ophir Lojkine | 2011-08-15 | 1 |
Task Description
On my iPod video, when I choose to load the WPS on startup (either in the Settings menu or in the alarm menu), it doesn't work. The player stays on the main (root?) screen.
I had to tweak root_menu.c (which I join) to get the alarm to work with the WPS. This is not a patch, but a quick and dirty workaround that I did just to be waked up on time tomorrow…

decode_packet in wmaprodec.c returns -1 almost immediately, most likely due to being passed corrupted data by the ASF parser, although I have not confirmed that to be the case. I've seen similar issues in WMA Std. Theres probably some ASF feature we do not correctly implement.

12759 | Bugs | Themes | Very Low | Various RDS issues (Clip Zip, YP-R0) | 2012-09-30 | Ludovic Jacques | 2015-02-25 | 1 |
Task Description
I noticed various RDS-related issues on my Clip Zip and Samsung R0
1) Sansa Clip Zip With the latest builds (for example version 341e2c4-120929) I noticed the RDS text just behaves crazy, like blinking for no reason and displaying strange characters. Besides, the RDS name won't display most of time or at least needs much time to display. When reverting back to an older build (0c4bd3a-120406 for example), the RDS name displays quickly and for all stations now and the RDS text is just displaying and scrolling normally. Tested and noticed with my theme lebellium Samsung -like: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?themeid=1681 and with the various DFKT Minimum Zip themes (this one for example: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?themeid=1539 ) screenshots of the issue: http://imageshack.us/a/img855/8724/dump120926124155.png http://imageshack.us/a/img837/2154/dump120926124439.png
2) Samsung YP-R0 In addition to the RDS issues reported for the Zip above that also exist on the R0, it seems that the RDS text makes the device crash after a few seconds or minutes with my theme lebellium Samsung-like (version 1.60 beta to download in attachment). I found 2 unsatisfying ways to bypass this annoying crash: -Remove the %s scrolling tag for the RDS text, that is to say replace "%s%ac%tz" by "%ac%tz". But that's not a good solution since then the RDS text is cut off. The %tz tag only makes sense when associated with a %s tag and all other themes supporting RDS use it and work well that way. -Replace the RDS text font (currently 20-DroidSans-Bold.fnt) by another font from the Rockbox Font Pack. As I want a nice anti-aliased font, the only acceptable alternative I found is the Ubuntu Bold font. But this font makes the device crash too…
So I just hope there is a bug somewhere that can be fixed?

9948 | Patches | Language | Very Low | Use sentence case in english.lang | 2009-02-23 | Dave Chapman | 2009-03-11 | 1 |
Task Description
This patch attempts to permanently fix the inconsistent mixture of “Title Case” and “Sentence case” in english.lang by applying “Sentence case” to the entire file.
I suggested we do this in a post to the rockbox-dev mailing list last year, but that just ended in a very split discussion with no conclusion.
I’m not sure if this patch wil result in anything different, but I made it for my own use, and thought I would post it, as there were a fair number of posters to that discussion that also prefered sentence case.
The old discussion:
http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-dev-archive-2008-08/0034.shtml
EDIT: I forgot to say this patch also changes a couple of uses of “center” to “centre”…

11582 | Patches | Music playback | Very Low | Use Fastforward/Rewind (FF/RW) to skip tracks quickly. | 2010-08-29 | Chad Joan | 2010-08-29 | 1 |
Task Description
This patch adds an option to allow the Fastforward/Rewind buttons to be used to skip tracks entirely.
This is an itch of mine that I scratched and am offering up to others if you are interested.
I’ve been using audio lessons to learn Japanese and ran into issues navigating with the normal FF/RW buttons. The acceleration based on track length left me with no sense of time since I don’t keep track of how far I am into my 30 minute long lessons. Simply backing up 5 seconds to catch something I missed was a problem because I’d have to look at what I was doing to see how far I’d ff/rw. Kinda hard when one tick moves 30 seconds too. This is problematic when driving! The existing skip-length feature is really good for this. However, if I use that to skip 5 second increments then I abandon any way of skipping entire tracks. So I re-purposed the FF/RW buttons for skipping tracks and use skip-length for navigating within a track.
I’ve been using this in r27841 for about a week on my Gigabeat, but it seems like it should work for r27942 as well.

10767 | Patches | Drivers | Very Low | usb for mini2440 | 2009-11-08 | Dominik Wenger | 2009-11-08 | 1 |
Task Description
This is a very early patch to enable USB on the mini2440.
This patch let rockbox react on USB, but unfortunatly i dont get further then the first reset interrupt from USB. Something in the init has to be wrong, so i dont get ep0 interrupt which should follow the reset.
Because of this problems, no attempt has been made to implement the acutal data transfer functions.
If someone wants to step in and debug.. feel free !

10278 | Patches | Utils | Very Low | Update release building scripts to simplify releases | 2009-06-05 | Jonathan Gordon | 2009-06-05 | 1 |
Task Description
The aim of this patch is to make releases as simple as possible... i.e the end goal would be to have someone run “$ ~/rockbox/tools/release/release.sh 3.3” and that would do everything except feed the cat...
the first version just modifies bins.pl to accept a version number which eventually gets passed to the Makefile and used in the source to set the version string in the source to “3.x-rBLAAA”.
This also defines RBRELEASE which can be used in the source to do stuff, for example, remove the debug menu in releases (if we decide to do that...) (RELEASE is defined in speex so had to add the RB prefix...)
Also, this changes the way configure is run to use command line args instead of passing input to it which is Just Wrong (TM) :p

12678 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Unable to play WMA Pro (possibly VBR) | 2012-05-18 | Albert Meltzer | 2012-05-20 | 1 |
Task Description
The player (Sansa Clip Zip) appears to refuse or unable to play some of my WMA tracks; as far as I can tell, the problem is specific to my WMA Pro files only as it plays none of them (but works with WMA2 successfully). I have attached one of the examples.
I understand that a similar issue was reported recently (in FS#12619 ) although, in my case, the player doesn’t start playing and skips to the next immediately, rather than playing part of the track.

Task Description
In FS#8894 (the original timestrech task), an updated version of the algorithm was uploaded.
The author said it performs and sounds better, so we should try to incorporate it.
I've tried building it, but I can't get a useful result, but I'm also not sure if I used it correctly. I used ./scale 2 < in.wav > out.wav. The result wasn't streched, but had crackling noises every few seconds.

11689 | Patches | Themes | Very Low | Theme settings | 2010-10-19 | Jonathan Gordon | 2010-10-19 | 1 |
Task Description
This adds a very simple way for themers to add some customisability to their themes without requiring the user to actually edit the skin files.
2 new tags are added: %Sl(name, default, …) to configure a setting named "name" with the default value "default", the … is any amount (up to 32) of strings which are accepted values. The order here is the order to be used with the next tag.
%Sv(name) to get the value. If the users value isnt in the above list, or the setting file is missing the default value will be used… can be used with normal ?<> conditionals or %if() (both number and name should work)
For the user to actually use this he needs to create /.rockbox/wps/skinsettings.txt which has the same syntax as .cfg files. i.e "name: value" and #comment.
This first version is very stupid and loads the .txt file into every skin which has a least one %Sl(), but the final version will do this much smarterer. (Also these settings are static so the values should be loaded at parser time instead of runtime.)
Also a plugin could be made to dump the allowed values for the used theme (or all skins) to disk to make it easier.
Because there is no limit to what the settings could be, I'm hoping that defacto setting names will just happen, the theme site could help with this also. It isnt a big deal if theme A accepts different values for a setting than theme B though.
Lastly, I need to also add a simple way for yes/no type settings %?Sv(show aa)<%Cd> should be able to work… Actually, brain fart time… because the settings are loaded at parse time we could probably use the feature handling code to always only parse the correct branch which would save a bunch of skin buffer and render time.

10461 | Patches | Plugins | Very Low | Support for custom drawing of styled/scrolled text in p... | 2009-07-24 | Andrew Mahone | 2009-09-14 | 1 |
Task Description
Add support for two new scroll styles, STYLE_NODRAW and STYLE_CUSTOM, with STYLE_CUSTOM causing the draw to be done via a hook (set with lcd_set_style_hook). lcd_puts_stroll_style_offset also returns a struct scrollinfo pointer. This may be used in conjunction with STYLE_NODRAW to redraw the scrolling text in a plugin which draws other graphics to the same part of the screen, by drawing the text using the offset in the struct scrollinfo after the background graphics have been drawn. My latest patch from FS#4817 is required, as it consolidates styled text drawing in one function, making it easier to replace the normal draw with a call to the hook, and reducing the binsize impact of this feature as well.
Support for core text scrolling in PictureFlow plugin to follow .

12558 | Bugs | Settings | Very Low | Some core_alloc users do not handle failures | 2012-01-22 | Lorenz | 2012-01-30 | 1 |
Task Description
If loading a config file that holds all configuration settings (Settings → Manage Settings - Save .cfg File) from Rockbox 3.9.1 in Rockbox 3.10 or the daily builds for Archos Recorder with Firmware V3, the player will not bootup correctly on the next restart and show:
I 4: IllInstr
directly at booting. I then press "On" again and get:
*PANIC* Stkov main
and the HD shuts down. If I press "On" again, the same loop continues.
The problem can only be resolved by plugging the player to USB, removing the rockbox directory and copying it again from the newest daily build or 3.10, then restart. It boots up fine again then. Doing the previous settings manually on 3.10 or the daily builds and then saving / loading them works fine and the player won´t have the boot-bug anymore.
I have attached the config file that creates the problem.
