Some collections (such as ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/games/amusements/life/dblifelib-2.tgz) use an extension of “.l” instead of “.cells” for what appears to be the same file format (same comment character and same characters for dead and live cell).

This patch just adds an entry to viewers.config so that Rockbox will treat .l files as supported and open them with Rocklife.

By default logf() will output to the serial port if that is enabled (HAVE_SERIAL). This is kind of distracting if logf() is used to debug serial communication itself.

The attached patch does the following:
- make logf() only output to serial if LOGF_SERIAL is defined (defaults to undef)
- adds an advanced configure option to enable LOGF_SERIAL

The patch is against r30429.

Hello,

with r28861the touchscreen works with glitches.
When I touch a line-item , the system sometimes don't react or the line selector just "twinkle".

My conjecture:
It has somethin to do with the new "kinetic-scroll"-feature, because after a little kinetic-scroll the touch become precise.

(And yes, I've done a calibration: no effect)

12541BugsPluginsVery LowLrc Plugin crashes.2012-01-16Eddy Summers42012-01-28 Task Description

I have a Sansa Clip+, Clip Zip and Fuze V2 all running various RB versions. The crash happens on all of them.

To focus I will use the Clip Zip (as its close at hand) and tell you what it does.
I get:

Prefetch abort
at 9D8DE9B4
FSR 0x11
(domain 1, fault

on a white background screen

This happens when trying to use the lrc plugin on the clip zip running RB version 4.0 (r31646-120109) and accessing a sandisk 16gb sd card that is 12.5gb full.
But i can confirm i get this message (or a similar one) on my fuze v2 and clip+ which are running 'stable' albeit older versions of rockbox (again from sd cards). I mention the sd cards but im 90% sure it happens on songs on the internal memory also.

I suspect it has something to do with my mp3 files having lyrics embedded within them but not as .lrc files. All i can explain is this:
I use wiki lyrics to find lyrics for songs and then right click copy them and use Tag&Rename and Paste into the mp3 file and save.

Using this method works fine for displaying lyrics when using ipad2's stock music player (pre iOS5) and androids app Poweramp for Samsung galaxy S2 phones and Creatives Ziio 7 tablet (running poweramp). This method also works for my Pc when running foobar and using the 'TextDisplay' component. The Text Display Format in foobar settings are $if2(%unsynced lyrics%,No lyrics available)

It should be noted that when using poweramp and choosing 'Lyrics' it asks where u want to choose to read the lyrics from:
-Auto (from tags if available, otherwise via musixmatch plugin)
-Musixmatch plugin
-From tags

I select the last option (from tags) always and it never fails. ipads player seems to also use this method. The lyrics do not scroll automatically, u need to scroll up and down to read them (should they be longer than the visible screen).

Occasionally lrc plugin wont crash if it actually finds a lrc file embedded in song and works fine. But this rarely happens, perhaps only 10% of my collection has lrc files embedded within them, soon as it goes to next track without one it produces this error.

I just did it again for a different file and a different error.

Prefetch abort

and so on so forth.

10156BugsLCDVery LowLCD sleep can theoretically happen after the backlight ...2009-04-21Boris Gjenero202009-04-253 Task Description

If LCD_SLEEP is put on the backlight queue immediatly after BACKLIGHT_ON, the LCD will go to sleep immediately after the backlight turns on. On the 5G iPod, the next backlight_on() call will wake it, but on some other targets it might not wake again.

For example, consider the following sequence of events:
1) backlight_on() is called, putting BACKLIGHT_ON on the queue
2) The LCD sleep timeout from the previous backlight shutoff puts LCD_SLEEP on the queue
3) BACKLIGHT_ON is received and the backlight is turned on. The call of backlight_lcd_sleep_countdown(false) does nothing about the LCD_SLEEP on the queue.
5) The LCD_SLEEP is received, putting the LCD to sleep again.

This patch causes LCD_SLEEP to be ignored by backlight_thread() when the backlight is on. It also removes a workaround from 5G iPod LCD sleep code.

This issue is theoretical and very improbable. I am not able to trigger this bug in r20774.

11665PatchesLCDVery LowLCD functions ignore viewport bg_pattern if a backgroun...2010-10-11Jonathan Gordon42010-10-112 Task Description

at least in the 16bit lcd drivers, all functions which use transparency (or clear pixels) get the pixel colour from the backdrop image, completly ignoring the bg_pattern.

This isnt a problem except in skins where it is perfectly reasonable to want a background image for most of the screen but a solid colour for one or two viewports.

There is a tiny problem though, bg_pattern is set to LCD_DEFAULT_BG which is a valid colour, so we probably need to add a flag to the viewport struct to say if it should ignore the background image or not.

10023PatchesDriversVery LowiTunes communication for software USB targets2009-03-14Jonas Häggqvist22009-03-173 Task Description

This patch will make an e200 present its SD card as an ipod mini 2G when queried by iTunes. It does this by changing a number of things:

1) Responding to SCSI inqueries
2) Using Ipod USB vid/pid and other usb details

The patch also enables logf for the usb_storage.c because I’m in a bit of a hurry.

To use this, make sure you have a partition on the SD card of type 0 (any size should do) and also the appropriate Ipod file structure (can be generated with e.g. gtkpod).

Please refer to forum post for full exchange: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,52518.0.html

In summary playing ALAC will crash the unit, other codecs not as much. My reasoning is (as contained in the forum post):

Converting some of my ALAC collection to FLAC to test has given excellent results = no crashes. I am suspicious of the ALAC decoder; watching the VIEW BUFFERING THREAD there seems to be consistency:

OGG/MP3/FLAC/WAV: CPU Frequency goes up to 124 until pcm: becomes full, then drops to 45mhz and pcm: hovers (it is always active) near the top of 100%. Upon track change the cycle starts again (124mhz until pcm: becomes full). I don't seem to get crashes.

ALAC: CPU Frequency goes up to 124 until pcm: becomes full, then drops to 45mhz and pcm: quickly goes down (takes about 2 seconds) to 75%, then cpu switches to 124mhz to get pcm: back up to 100%. This goes on constantly (cpu high - low cycle) while a single track/file is playing. I am now believing this cpu going up and down constantly gives me the crashes. Note on crashes: I don't know when they will happen, sometimes after a minute or two, sometime after 10 minutes , there is no pattern I can tell.

I am having a couple of problems with Rockbox on my iRiver H140.
The first issue is that all my songs in the files folder are displaying only in the order
that they were uploaded onto the machine. If I go into the settings and choose to display
Artists in alphabetical order it doesn't have any effect! I am left to endlessly scroll through
the names or listen through the iriver player which doesn't play WAVs or FLACs so i can't access everything.
Secondly, if I start up and resume playback of an album it doesn't then allow me to access the files folder when I navigate to it. I have to then restart my player and go to files from there. If I later come out to the main menu and choose Files, or any folder for that matter, it won't open. It's really frustrating. Any ideas of a fix?

10034PatchesLCDVery LowiPod Photo, Color: LCD sleep and proper LCD shutdown2009-03-19Boris Gjenero102010-06-234 Task Description

This patch implements HAVE_LCD_SHUTDOWN functionality for Photo and Color iPods. It is in response to issue 2 in http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=20994 : “2. The LCD screen on the iPod is not cleared properly when I shut down rockbox. I see 1-2 horizontal lines remain on the screen (which do fade after a minute or so). Nothing is wrong with my IPod’s LCD screen as I did not experience this with Apple’s Firmware”

It seems the Color iPod can have 4 different LCDs. They’re detected via two GPIO bits in lcd-color_nano.c. Types 0 and 2 are the old LCD with an unknown controller and they use the same init, shutdown and update procedures, and they are reported as 0. Types 1 and 3 are similar to HD66789R. They have different init and shutdown procedures but they share the same update procedure. Both 1 and 3 were reported as 1 earlier.

To see what LCD type you have, from the main menu go to System → Debug (Keep Out) → View HW Info and then see the number after “LCD type:”.

This patch has only been tested with LCD type 3 so far.

I am submitting this as a patch because I feel it is not a significant bug. Theoretically, the DC voltage that’s left can degrade the LCD, but the line fades quickly and no negative after-effects were reported.

I would like to also add LCD initialization code and develop HAVE_LCD_SLEEP functionality.

11544PatchesLCDVery LowiPod Nano2G Display Vsync2010-08-15Michael Marley2010-08-151 Task Description

This patch enables display vsync on the iPod Nano 2G, currently only for the Type 1 (LDS176) display. It removes tearing and can make animation smoother. However, right now it uses an extremely CPU-unfriendly method of waiting for synchronization, which makes the display quite slow in some circumstances. I hope to implement DMA to copy the framebuffer, which should help somewhat. However, I am probably going to need some help to do this.

TheSeven gets all the credit for this patch, since he found where the Tearing Effect (vblank) signal was connected to the s5l8701 and wrote the vsync code. All I did was drop it into the display driver in the right spot.

Occasionally when I reboot to the iPod firmware, something has caused the previously unset alarm setting to be enabled and the playback mode is set to shuffle. This doesn't happen with every reboot, but does more than 50% of the time.

Steps to duplicate:

1. Disable the alarm and set the shuffle mode to "None" in the iPod firmware.
2. Reset and boot into Rockbox
3. Listen to a few tracks
4. Reboot into the iPod firmware and check the shuffle mode and alarm settings.

I can't confirm 100% yet as to the time on the alarm being reset as well, but it does seem to consistently read 6 AM - which is a bit of a shock if I've been listening in Rockbox during the day and then I reboot into the Apple firmware and dock in my iHome, expecting to sleep in late on the weekend.

I have an iPod 4G Grayscale (model A1059) running Rockbox 3.14 with an Apple FM remote (model A1187). The remote part works ok (Play/Select and Fwd/Rev buttons work - volume control is separate due to it being connected to the line out, but works).

However, the radio menu does not show up in the main menu when connected. Not when I boot with the remote connected, not when I connect it after booting, and not if I go to a different menu and then back.

In the debugging menu, it simply says that the FM tuner hardware is not found.

I am sure that this used to work at some point. Are there known regressions?

I have installed Rockbox build 0F89B04-160628 using this (https://files.freemyipod.org/~user890104/bootloader-ipodclassic.html) method.

I have created a dynamic playlist (Database > long select artist > current playlist > Queue Shuffled). Play and then pause the music and then hold the play button down to shutdown rockbox. Plug in USB cable from your computer (Win10) in to the iPod and the iPod should start powering on and then a white *panic* screen should appear.

Workaround is to have Rockbox already fully booted before plugging in a USB cable from the computer.

12568PatchesConfigurationVery LowiPod Classic - limit volume to +6db2012-01-29Albert Barca122012-02-134 Task Description

The iPod Classic Cirrus CS42L55 DAC+amp chip is specified to output audio up to +12dB versus the reference level (0.775V RMS) and the current Rockbox driver implements this accordingly (note that the OF limits the amplification to a lower level).

However, any amplification above +3dB applied to a 0dB signal results in serious clipping errors, the sound being distorted (oscilloscope measurements attached). This is not a surprise, given that +12dB translates in over 8V peak-to-peak output, way above what the iPod is capable of with its 3.7V battery.

Distortions aside, +12dB can be overkill for most of the earphones (depending on the sensitivity) and not a very pleasant experience. If you put the iPod in your pocket and forget to lock it you may experience this frequently.

In practice not all tracks have peaks reaching the 0dB level (actually nowadays this is quite common given the "loudness war"). To provide some room for additional amplification when needed, I found the +6dB limit to be a good compromise.

9787PatchesDriversVery LowiPod 5G TV out2009-01-12Boris Gjenero222009-03-094 Task Description

Here is a preliminary patch for TV out on a 5th generation iPod. Play a BMP file and TV out will activate. NTSC is the default. If the file has 576 lines, the output will be in PAL. The image stays until another is loaded or TV output is disabled via the debug menu..

The following formats ought to work:
720×480, 24 bpp for NTSC
720×576, 24 bpp for PAL
Many programs including Windows Paint and ImageMagick convert can write such files. Other resolutions and bit depths may work. For example WPS background screens display properly but other WPS bitmaps don’t.

Known issues:
- More work needs to be done to integrate this with Rockbox. No, you cannot view the Rockbox interface, JPEGs or mpegplayer output yet.
- When the LCD is updated, there is a temporary disturbance on TV output
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrovision#Analog_copy_prevention is enabled. Yes, the hardware can disable it, but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.
- The original firmware probably outputs images differently. It can load programs into the BCM which perform decoding there, and that is probably faster.

Hi all!
After 3.10 update I usually get my player frozen with usb plug icon if I connect it to any USB host while the player is off.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
1. Power off the iPod.
2. Plug it to Usb host. (tested with mac and Android)
3. Wait the system to boot.
4. It freezes with usb connect icon (no menu bar). Only holding Menu+Select help.

Thanks. Great firmware!

12109BugsPlaylistsVery LowiPod 3G screen flickers after boot and resuming playbac...2011-05-10Steve Yeats2011-05-10 Task Description

This occurs on Stable 3.8.1 and all builds currently up to Tuesday, May 10, 2011 (r29850-110510).

When my iPod 3G is powered on with no song in the queue to be resumed, and the "resume Playback" item is selected, the screen flickers, the quick glimpse of the selected Now Playing theme can be seen (for me, DancePuffDuo, but also confirmed for every other one I've tried) and it returns me back to the Main Menu without any warning… just an abrupt return.

I've reinstalled stable as well as various builds leading up to the date above and all have the same effect.

The way to reproduce this bug is to Play a single song from the database that is by itself (in the artist/album category of your choosing, or, the last song in an artist/album grouping) and then, after it is done playing and returns you to the database or main menu, shut down and restart Rockbox. Select the Resume Playback item on the Main Menu. The screen should flicker and abruptly return you to the Main Menu without any warning that there is nothing to resume playing.

This bug does not reproduce with the iPod 3G simulator with 05/10/2011's build (r29850-110510).

rockbox 3.5: ipod doesn’t recognize the connection of usb. i understand that rockbox doesn’t support usb on a 3G ipod, but it would be nice to boot into disk-mode like it does for firewire.
