832 | Bugs | Music playback | Medium | playback 'skips' | 2003-01-27 | | 2003-04-15
Task Description
In build 20030121.ajz [recorder], I have experienced some strange skips while the player is subject to moderate motion [moving car]. No problem whatsoever if the player is stationary. I have reproduced this with two different hard-disks. Version 1.4 does not show the problem.
The problem: while playing back hour long radio recordings, somewhat infrequently [once every 5-10 minutes or so], I get a half-second or so snip of something that played a few minutes before, along with a skip in the time-line of more than a half-second. If I rewind and replay, no problem. One of the disks [an ibm] ran the ibm diagnositc [long version] with no errors [no test available for the other drive].
Just a guess, it looks like something very different is being done on a re-read than with version 1.4.

2687 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Rewinding at end of song confuses playback | 2005-09-21 | | 2008-01-08
Task Description
Using the rewind feature when an mp3 only has a few seconds remaining confuses the firmware as to which song is actually playing resulting in it NOT playing at the current rewind position, but rather playing the next track in queue(at the rewind position). In addition, the wps for the next track in queue is not displayed, the previous track’s wps that was rewound is still displayed. Going into navigation mode will correct the wps display issue.
I could reproduce the bug reliably with mp3’s. Flacs and oggs appear to fine.

5105 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Reporting wrong times/bitrates on mono-encoded files | 2006-04-12 | | 2006-06-26
Task Description
When listening to an MP3 file encoded in 64kbps mono on the iRiver H120, Rockbox reports the bitrate as 128kbps and, on screens that show the remaining time of the track, it shows the remaining playing time incorrectly. It shows a time exactly half of the true running time and still decrements every second. When it reaches 0, it starts counting backwards - e.g. “-00:-01” for the remainder of the file. On a 64kbps STEREO file, the bitrate and time display is shown correctly.

Task Description
H140, Standard rockbox settings, autochange directory and follow playlist set on, mp3 files.
playback type is ‘Album’, not playlist, i.e. select a track to play in a album, without adding it to a playlist and let it continue.
I get ‘codec failure’ after the last track is played. I do have files in the album which are not mp3 files, the file extensions in an album are .m3u .txt .jpg and a .pun file, I think it’s the .pun file which creates the codec failure, if I remove the .pun file all is well.

when playing the last file in a folder it jumps nicely to the first file of the next folder, but only plays like 2 min of that song then playback stops (for flac files, mp3s seems to play longer, sometimes even a few songs, but also eventually stops). to continue you can either skip to the next track or select a track from the filebrowser, but you can’t skip back to the beginning of the track it stops on. to me it seems like the codec-bar in “Info→Debug (Keep Out!)→View audio thread” ends up empty to early, also the “boost ratio” falls down and ends on 0% at the same time as the codec-bar turns empty and playback stops.

Task Description
I use my studio 20 in both a car audio and computer audio setup. On the low end computer audio speakers it's not bad. Not too much distortion at high volume. But, when playing in my Honda Accord with a stock stereo system, it can get really distorted. I have to keep it at low volumes. Plus the bass doesn't come in as bass, more like a hissing sound. When I use Archos standard OS everything works/sounds fine. Bottom line: Interface is great. Sound quality needs a little more work.

My assumption: The balancing has to be set when the music playback initalizes.

Repowered on.
Boot Logo is distored. Not same as show in screen shot. More likse a centered graphic with empty band in center of display (horizontal).
Real issue: MP3 playback had a lot of popping (like overdriving) sound.
A fast 'loud' song by Bad Religion (supersonic)was all pops. A quiet starting song by Wierd Al (The Saga Begins) plays fine in the beginning, but when background music increases popping returns.
Adjusted Volume, Bass, and Teble to 30%, 0db and 0db respectively, no change in pops.

There are some MP3s which freeze the AJB, i can only switch it off then (but the backlight is working). It seems to occur on VBR or high-bitrates-non-VBR files only (not 100% sure anyway), but not all of these, not the highest-bitrates-VBR and not all the files over a same album. Also, it's not related with the encoder used. Anyway, it's always occuring on the same files. I haven't tried to recopy these on AJB.

The AJ with the Archos Firmware used to do this too if the Player joggled while walking. But it only used to stop playback and resumed when the player was still again and could access the HD.

Task Description
I have JBR20 with on-board firmware 1.24.
If I use RockBox 1.3, some files will not play - instead, I get a screen that looks like:
No other info on screen, but that text appears in the "correct" place. The information is of course wrong - the encoding was 128kbit and 44.1KHz, if I remember correctly.
I know I have some files which may have incorrect timing information (the Archos firmware (I am using 1.27c) plays these correctly, but displays a time which is an integer multiple of the actual time, and counts down at double or triple speed to compensate. Winamp 2.8 plays them quite happily with the correct file info so I don't know what the problem is.). I don't know if this is related.
Other than that, RockBox is something I can see myself moving to - probably on the next major release. Keep up the good work.

Task Description
I've made the switch to Rockbox. All is well except one minor bug found. My player is a Recorder 20 (unmodified) with base firmware 1.24. / Rockbox version 1.3
If you Pause the current song and then press "Back", the song begins from the start with the Pause "//" indicator still showing. If you then press "Play" the indicator changes to ">" but the time elapsed changes to a very large number.
Abosultely excellent progress, by the way, on the RockBox function. I really like the resume function within a track, plus the more intelligent button operations and elimination of some very long-standing bugs in the Archos firmware. Keep up the excellent work.

Task Description
Occurs when JB turned off after “End of Song List” message, with Resume set to Yes and Repeat set to Off.
After the last song plays, “End of Song List” message is displayed, then a browser screen with folder contents. If the JB is turned off in the browser screen, and then powered up again, play resumes starting with last few seconds of last track in folder (the last one played before “End of Song List”).
Repeatable by selecting last track in folder, advancing nearly to the end, waiting for “End of…” msg.and browser scrn, then pressing Off. On the next power up, the last seconds of the song will play.
Also, play then continues starting from first track as if Repeat were set to All, even if set to Off.

Task Description
Hardware: JB6000 [HW Info] ROM: 5.02 USB: neg ATA: 0x300 Mask: 0000
Has occurred at battery levels between 25% and 100% with unit running on batteries.
I was listening to the JB in random play. About 3 minutes into a 4 minute song, the player stops playing. I pulled it out of the case, and the timer had stopped, and the red drive light was on solid. I presssed stop, but nothing changed. I had to turn the unit off then back on to restore.
The second case happened about 30 minutes later. I was in the data center with the unit in my shirt pocket. I leaned forward, then back again and the back of it tapped my chest and I got the same indications as above and had to do the same thing to fix it. A few songs after resetting it, I pressed stop to change directories. The JB froze in place, with the drive light blinking on-off at about half-second intervals. Again, I had to turn off to recover. This has happened several times, both when the unit was stationary and in motion.
I suspect that it could be the error recovery code that is doing this. In earlier versions (e.g. 1.3), a drive error would cause the JB to skip to the next track. Is it possible that now you get this wierd issue if you get an error.

Task Description
With Rockbox 1.4, I have had several instances where an mp3 stops playing mid-song. It just freezes.
In the most recent occurence, I was playing a playlist of 1902 files, with shuffle mode on. It stopped midway through a song. If I hit the play/pause button, the display would show that it was paused, and if I hit it again, the play icon would show, though it wouldn’t continue playing. When I powered the unit down and restarted and resumed playing, it began playing in the middle of the song before on the playlist, not the song it got stuck on. I went and selected the song it got stuck on, and it played fine. I used Rockbox 1.3 quite a bit, and never had any problems.
Here’s info about my machine: Archos Jukebox Player 20 RockBox 1.4 rom 5.06 Battery: 74%
Unfortunately, I don’t have the model number as I don’t have the unit handy.

453 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Gaps between files on Rockbox | 2002-10-20 | | 2003-04-15 | 1 |
Task Description
AJBR20, ROM 1.26, update 1.27c. Problem occurs on Rockbox 1.4 and 1.3.
I recently posted a message on the Yahoo forum about Gaps Between Tracks on my AJBR20 using Rockbox. Before filing a bug report I have investigated the problem further:
Using the ‘gapless’ setting on the WinLAME encoder (and on some other encoders also I believe) there are a series of leading zeros placed in the .MP3 file before the first MPEG header. I don’t know why they are there, but they make Rockbox pause between tracks (the SPDIF stream is broken briefly as well). The stock Archos firmware (1.27c) does not pause with these files, and nor does WinAmp. (Could ID3v2 tags placed at the front of the .mp3 files also cause this problem?)
Attached are a series of small test-tone MP3 files that display the problem. Details are:
BadTone1.mp3, BadTone1.mp2, BadTone3.mp3: Encoded with WinLAME with ‘no gap’ set ON. Rockbox pauses between these tracks. SPDIF stream is broken between files. (Archos firmware plays these totally seamlessly)
GoodTone1.mp3, GoodTone1.mp2, GoodTone3.mp3: Encoded with WinLAME with ‘no gap’ set on. Edited in a hex editor to remove the leading zeros. Rockbox plays these totally seamlessly - SPDIF stream is continuous through files.
Hope this helps you guys! (and I hope you can fix it ) Thanks again for all your hard work so far, Brian. (brianm@screen.subtitling.com)

Task Description
When playing MP3s, regardless of VBR or not, the playback somehow jumps to a wrong data block in memory while playing. It first looked like the “skipping” phenomenon mentioned in the mailing list, but while in the first several seconds (up to a minute or so, depends on the bit rate) of a song even data blocks from the song played _before_ the current are repeated. Second observation with it: The playing time of the current song displayed in the WPS is wrong, most of the time it’s _much_ too large (e.g., “20:50” instead of “3:12”).

I’ve just noticed that a bug has appeared stopping gapless playback from working, the last daily build that I have that plays back seamlessly is 20021127. The first time I noticed the problem was in 20021213, and it still does not work in 20030106. I have not got to try any versions in-between, so I’m sorry I cannot say exactly in which version the bug appeared…
20021127 works 20021213 bug 20030106 bug
The bug occurs only when the MP3 tracks have ID3 (I’ve only tried v1.1) tags. Tracks with no tags, and tracks with no tags but Xing VBR headers, play back perfectly with no gaps.
Some example test tones are included:
Tones2, No Headers: Plays perfectly with no gaps on all builds. Tones2, Xing Headers only: Plays perfectly with no gaps on all builds. Tones2, ID3 only: Gaps between tracks from around 20021213. Tones2, Xing Headers + ID3: Gaps again.
Hope this helps!
P.S. I’ve made many recordings with the latest versions, including some 5-hour radio shows, and they are perfect every time. No problems at all.
