5803 | Bugs | Music playback | High | Constantly rebuffering | 2006-08-13 | Paul Louden | 2006-08-13
Task Description
Due to some recent changes (I suspect relating to MEMORYSIZE, but have no evidence to back it up yet, as I don't know where it's defined yet) players constantly rebuffer after the buffer gets below a certain point, but only seem to buffer a very small amount, fall back down below, and rebuffer again, leading to near constant activity.
This happens on at least the H300 and iPod Nano, and I have no reason to believe it doesn't happen on everything.

4787 | Bugs | Music playback | High | Skipping songs in playlist when using high bitrate ogg ... | 2006-03-06 | Tim Crist | 2006-04-21
Task Description
When playing certain albums encoded as q9 ogg vorbis, songs are being skipped. The songs being skipped play fine if you play them directly. They also play fine if you skip directly to them. What’s strange is that the songs are actually shown in the playlist, they just don’t get played. Depending on the album, different song positions are skipped. In the two examples I’ve identified so far, it’s the fifth and seventh songs respectively that are skipped.
Through some experimentation with one of the albums I was able to gain a little more insight into this. For that particular album the fifth song was always being skipped. I noticed that while the second song was playing (and subsequently buffering the fifth song) the boost percentage was 90%+. Hard drive activity also seemed to be a bit eratic - the wps indicator was flashing and seemed to be on for longer than normal. As an experiment I re-encoded the second song to q8 (which would require less boost) - and it fixed the problem. So based on that, I’m thinking this has something to do with a buffering problem when high boosting is required.
This issue is maybe three or fours weeks old, before that the same albums played fine. I *believe* it might have been introduced around the time of the eq / pcm buffer changes, but I’m not positive.

2402 | Bugs | Music playback | High | Playback stops mid-tune intermittently | 2004-11-25 | sundar raman | 2006-03-30
Task Description
Rockbox ver 2.3, OS ver 1.30j. Archos Jukebox FM Recorder v2.
Playback stops mid-song. Frequency appears to be pretty high (at least once every 2-3 days of regular play). Could happen within 10 minutes or after several hours - I have not determined anything consistent about the issue. The red led comes on at the same time. The only way to continue with playing or going back to a different tune is to shut-down and restart the unit. Shutdown requires at least an 8 second hold-down of the off button (whereas the usual shutdown only requires 3 seconds). I tried a variety of different combinations of buttons to get the unit going, but could not get it to continue playing, or skip out of the track. Also, the unit does not shut itself off after 30 minutes when in this state, so it appears that the unit thinks play is legitimate (idle timeout does not ever expire).
Problem occurs both with playlists and with playing files in directories. There does not seem to be any commonality between the files played (i.e., encoding, size, etc.).
Unit has 8GB free, so it does not appear to be a space issue.
Things I have not yet tried: 1. Rolling back to an earlier version, or using latest build from CVS (I’m going to test that over the weekend). 2. Formatting the disk and starting again, which I’ll try next week.

2899 | Bugs | Music playback | High | iRiver H-140 playback stops before end of file | 2006-01-09 | | 2006-04-27
Task Description
On my iRiver H-140, when playing back some, but not all, mp3 files containing multiple tracks of an album (one or more CDs) playback using Rockbox (daily build 08/01/2006) stops at the end of the first track, i.e. after 3 to 5 minutes of an 80 minute file. When playing back the same file(s) using the iRiver firmware, the file is played all the way through to the end. Is this a known problem and is there a fix?

Task Description
All of my my CD collection was encoded with OGG, which I'm pretty sure was a post 1.0 release (all done in the past year). I've used several different encoders so such as Grip, EAC, GoldWave, so I do have working OGG files along with the mass of problem ones that all play in the standard iRiver firmware.
The behavior is that it tries to read the file, displaying 0s and ?s:00 for a second or two then just halts playback. The last daily build I tried was 1/19/06. In fact, verifying this playback problem I was entering this it froze things up…not sure if that's related.

2945 | Bugs | Music playback | High | Playback stops suddenly on recorder v1 | 2006-01-24 | | 2006-04-24
Task Description
Sometimes when listening to music the playback just stops on my Recorder V1. When this happens, the screen is back at the file browser. I hit the 'On' button and Rockbox loads the playlist and begins playing right where it left off.
-It seems to be pretty random, and occurs often (when I last checked, it was 3 times in less than 2 hours) -My batteries are over 50% full -The unit is out in the open; nothing to accidentally press a button
I never had a problem with this before. The build I'm running is the special build Linus compiled to test and update to the charging software, details here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=2001.60. I believe that the special build is built on code from the Jan 17 or 18 '06. Prior to flashing this particular version of Rockbox, I had been running a daily build released about 10 days or so after 2.5 was released. It never gave me any problems like this.
This is what Linus had to say about the problem: "Interesting. Maybe you have one of those recorders that detect fake STOP button presses when the drive spins up. The latest Rockbox builds might be more sensitive to those events."
So perhap Rockbox is too sensitive to button presses now?

What I did at the time: (Note: I didn't use seeking at any point, I just let the track play.)
Started playing a track. Marked A position. Marked B position. Played a few loops.
Then I wanted to change the B position. I waited until required end-point came. Marked B position again. Track started playing from the start of the song instead of the A position.
I pressed STOP to return to the browser, then NAVI to start playing the song again. The player froze on the [Loading…] box.
Hope this helps. Mr. Brownstone

Task Description
In build 20030121.ajz [recorder], I have experienced some strange skips while the player is subject to moderate motion [moving car]. No problem whatsoever if the player is stationary. I have reproduced this with two different hard-disks. Version 1.4 does not show the problem.
The problem: while playing back hour long radio recordings, somewhat infrequently [once every 5-10 minutes or so], I get a half-second or so snip of something that played a few minutes before, along with a skip in the time-line of more than a half-second. If I rewind and replay, no problem. One of the disks [an ibm] ran the ibm diagnositc [long version] with no errors [no test available for the other drive].
Just a guess, it looks like something very different is being done on a re-read than with version 1.4.

Task Description
H340 running current build dated 2007030[78] (or earlier, but not 20070228) has serious problems with voice support: some voices from http://tbrn.net/rockbox/voices07030[78].7z don’t work at all: Everything seems to be normal, until one enters the menu while playing music, then returns to WPS and tries to stop playback. Playback stops for awhile and then starts again. Entering menu wihle music is playing crashes Rockbox.
The voices from the above mentioned package which do partially work are: Cepstral David, Reed and Synthethic Dave. With one of these voices: Everything works as expected (including voice support), until one plays music. If voice would be used during playback (for example because of entering the menu), Rockbox crashes and HW reset is required. Stopping playback in WPS will also crash Rockbox. The three voices that partially work for me are all less than 1.3M in size.
I have voice menus enabled, language is english, I don’t have disk problems.

8092 | Bugs | Music playback | Low | rebuffer_handle is hopelessly broken | 2007-11-05 | Brandon Low | 2007-11-26 | 1 |
Task Description
rebuffer_handle for backwards seeks is hopelessly broken. it will only work in the very isolated case that there is no track after the playing track on buffer. Otherwise it will end up with a short allocation as it tries to rebuffer the new file from earlier than it was originally buffered.
I tried various solutions but none look good. First I tried to move it earlier on the buffer to make space. This doesn’t work because if the buffer is filling we could be mid-read and could then put the current track back on space that is about to get overwritten. Even if the buffer is not filling, if there are any tracks on buffer earlier than the playing track then it can’t safely move earlier.
My next solution was to return an error code which tells playback that it needs to do a full rebuffer. I have a patch with this proposed solution (as well as an associated but not equivalent fix to put the PRESEEK functionality back into the world and manage it from the playback side.
See attached patch, which breaks horribly and I don’t see why.
This FS is here for a tracker as either Nico or I get to fixing this for real.

11863 | Bugs | Music playback | Low | Playback / buffer freezes | 2011-01-06 | Andree Buschmann | 2011-04-06 | 15 |
Task Description
Extracted from FS#11830 . Since the issues described below also occur when FS#11830 is not applied this bug report is generated.
On iPod nano 1G and iPod Video’s the following were issues observed: 1) Device does not fully start (no menu visible, background image loaded) 2) Playback stopps or does not start (WPS playtime is 0:00) 3) “data abort” on white screen
Except (1) and (3) the iPod’s UI responds. In situation (2) loading mpegplayer or shut down via longpress Play/Pause is not possible. In general plugins (tested with test_fps and test_mem) can be loaded and performed normally.
On iPod Video this happened with builds which based on r28915, r28940 and r28960. So, before the ATA but after some kernel/thread/priority changes.
I could provoke this failure twice when generating the DB during playback. But these failure also happened randomly during standard playback (mp3 and mpc in my case).
As long as we do not know what is happening I will assume this is not specific for PP502x processors.

Task Description
I use my studio 20 in both a car audio and computer audio setup. On the low end computer audio speakers it's not bad. Not too much distortion at high volume. But, when playing in my Honda Accord with a stock stereo system, it can get really distorted. I have to keep it at low volumes. Plus the bass doesn't come in as bass, more like a hissing sound. When I use Archos standard OS everything works/sounds fine. Bottom line: Interface is great. Sound quality needs a little more work.

Task Description
There is a new playback bug that causes a track to repeat even though repeat is DISABLED. The bug occurs as follows: play the first track in a directory and allow playback to continue normally through the playlist. I’m guessing that the repeat occurs when playback reaches the end of the buffer. The song at the end of the buffer? repeats and the playlist information moves to the next track. i.e. The ID3 info still shows the track that is repeated, but the playlist info shows “6 of 10” even the track 5 is being repeated. Clear enough?
This has occurred on my iRiver H140 and H320, Sansa e280 and Gigabeat F so it’s not target specific. It showed up within the last two weeks, but at this time I can’t be more specific about the date it was introduced.

Task Description
The summary pretty much says it all I keep getting stuck in the directory view with the current build on my h140 if I try to use it to change which directory I am currently playing files from when playback of the current file is paused.
I pause the current song enter directory view, change into the new directory I wish to listen too and press select on the first file.
My player then no longer responds to key presses to move the curser up and down or even shutdown, but when you press a key the back light comes on and after a few seconds the back light goes back out again.
The only way shutdown the player or exit the directory view at this point is to press the reset button.
I don't know if which codec I am using is important but I am using ogg files at the moment.

5570 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Voicing causes freeze on music playback | 2006-06-19 | Mike Holden | 2006-08-29 | 1 |
Task Description
If I enable voicing of any kind, then it causes major problems on my 340, with a daily build from the last couple of days. Currently loaded is CVS-20060619.
First off, no file/dir voicing occurs.
Second off, when I play a music file, although the file loads and the WPS shows correct data, no playback occurs, and the counter sticks at 0:00. Sometimes you will hear a tiny fraction of playback, but nothing more. The unit just stops there. It will respond ok to pause/play, and will respond to stop. However when pressing stop, it gets as far as the Creating Bookmark splash, and locks up completely, needing a hard reset with a paperclip.
After a bit of messing around trying to find which build broke it (it used to work, so I thought) I finally hit on what the problem is - while investigating another issue with voicing, I renamed my english.voice file to stop it being loaded on bootup, and this is totally the cause of the problem. If I rename it back to english.voice, everyting works as expected, but if in rename it to EEEenglish.voice, then file/dir voicings fail, and the unit locks up as described above.
The workaround is obvious (load the file and name it correctly), but this bug will hit any user who wants to voice files and dirs, but who doesn’t have an appropriate voice file loaded.

Task Description
Hi, I've been using the development version of Rockbox in my ipod classic 6th generation for about two years I think, but from some time, like a month or two, I'm experiencing playback issues as the track I'm listening suddenly skip forward or backward, or even jump for a few seconds on another mp3 file inside the ipod I was just listening before. I don't think is a ipod issue because I can listen the file inside the ipod with my computer player without problems.
There some way I can check older development revisions for the classic? It appears that it doesn't show in the dev build link on the site because is not fully supported. Thanks

13108 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Random crashes when playing music | 2017-03-16 | somedude | 2017-12-16
Task Description
For a couple of months my Sansa Fuze v2 has been crashing randomly when playing music. Most of the time I just get a white screen with an error message. The last message I got was :
'undefined instruction at 0006DC8C'
(I think that last number varies at each crash)
This didn't happen with v3.13, but it's been happening with every daily build I've tested IIRC.
It doesn't happen very often so it's hard to reproduce. I listen to music in public transports about twice a day and this happens not more than once a week. It seems to happen more often when the battery is low (less than 10%). It generally happens early in a playback session, when the first or second track is played.
Sometimes I don't get a white screen, but the program freezes and some parts of the interface are surrounded with white frames. I don't know if it's the same bug or if it's unrelated.
Note that I'm always listening to music on a microSD card, and I haven't tried on the main memory.
PS: I chose "Sansa Fuze+" in the OS list because I couldn't find Sansa Fuse v2.

Task Description
Audio playback seems to have occasional but regular "breaks" when the screen is active. I.e. it will play for about 10 seconds, pause for a couple, resume playing, pause, rinse and repeat until the screen blanks. After the screen goes blank playback continues as normal. It doesn't seem to matter if the backlight is on or not, just if there is anything showing on the screen. Experiencing the problem on both a stock and Compactflash modded 5.5 80GB (model A1136) running version 3.14.
So far I only have only been using MP2 and MP3 files with Rockbox so I don't know if it's specifically a MP3 decoder issue or something else. Anyways, here it is.

I have problems with my SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip with the most recent version (v3.14) Everything works fine on the player, except if the memory card is in. It's a Kingstone 64GB MicroSD XC, formatted Fat32 16K sector allocations. About 6-7000 files on it. If the card is in the player, then it produce random freezings. Sometimes with an error message, sometimes it just "loose" the card and the internal memory too. Do it pretty random during playing/browsing, while playing games, changing settings.
I try to get the error message again then I can update. But at the moment the old version is back 3.13 again.

Task Description
Rockbox daily version rockbox-h120-20060430.zip running on iRiver H140.
Playing back a FLAC file encoded using dbPoweramp and then pressing and holding the fast forward / seek button causes playback to go to the beginning of the next track. Pressing rewind causes playback to commence from the beginning of the second track. Maybe an issue with how long the button is pressed? It acts as if the button was “jogged” rather than held each direction.
I searched and couldn’t find this as an issue. Foobar on the PC can search through FLACs, this should too. I believe should be a high priority item.

5305 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | fast-forward problems | 2006-05-07 | paul | 2006-07-03 | 1 |
Task Description
The Rockbox daily 2006-05-07 build of the iRiver h100 series port (on an iRiver h140) seems to have some problems fast-forwarding through FLAC files. In particular, if I try to fast-forward to the midway point of a 300MB FLAC, Rockbox appears to start seeking to it – the hard drive light flashes – but Rockbox just winds up restarting the playback from the beginning.
I’ve noticed that I can fast-forward ahead by short hops – about 1 or 2 minutes at a time – without this problem happening. Perhaps it’s fast-forwarding through the cache for these short hops, but the longer skip exceeds the cache?
Fast-forwarding through large MP3s (albeit not 300MB MP3s …) seems to work OK
Any ideas?

I have noticed that when you use the equalizer on the ipod the music starts to skip about ever 7-10 seconds. It also skips if you are skrolling through menus even without the equalizer on.

5318 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | playback stops unexpectedly | 2006-05-08 | Robert Kukla | 2006-06-06
Task Description
This is difficult to reproduce, as it usually only happens after playing several albums worth of music (playlist or auto change dir). The playback stops in the middle of a song and I can’t get it to restart whatever I try (toggle pause, stop/play, select different song). Only solution I have found is to shut down and restart in which case it auto-resumes without problems. One thing I noticed is that the wps gets somewhat corrupted when skipping in aforementioned (silent) state - notably the year field suddenly contained the replaygain value. It has happened often enough on different files to rule out corrupted files. Also they play without problems after restart. All my files are mp3. I’ll try to collect more information, but it is difficult as it usually happens when I am out and about. Has anyone else experienced this?

5325 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | codec faliure after last track in album | 2006-05-09 | | 2006-10-24
Task Description
H140, Standard rockbox settings, autochange directory and follow playlist set on, mp3 files.
playback type is ‘Album’, not playlist, i.e. select a track to play in a album, without adding it to a playlist and let it continue.
I get ‘codec failure’ after the last track is played. I do have files in the album which are not mp3 files, the file extensions in an album are .m3u .txt .jpg and a .pun file, I think it’s the .pun file which creates the codec failure, if I remove the .pun file all is well.

5329 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Playback pauses spontaneously, then starts seeking auto ... | 2006-05-09 | j | 2006-06-06
Task Description
This is very hard to reproduce. It has only happened about 3 times in the last week. I will be playing music (without touching anything for the last 5 tracks or so), then suddenly playback pauses, but comes back about a second later. You think all is well, but then, playback starts to seek forward indefinitely on its own! The only solution I’ve found is a reboot when it’s seeking. Or, the first time playback pauses, if you hit buttons, that prevents it from acting funny. By ‘hitting buttons’ I mean, next-track/prev-track/pause.

Resume playback on WAV or FLAC tracks does not start from the position of the track where it was left off. It starts from the beginning of the track.

I played songs with a long playing time (mine was 8 mins) the song skips every few seconds. Strangly enough if i go back into file manager (select button) it doesn’t skip anymore. NMaybe someone could have a look at that. Thanks a lot, D-Skyman

5414 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | File/dir naming stops at end of playlist | 2006-05-22 | Mike Holden | 2006-09-28 | 1 |
Task Description
On my iRiver H340, I have voicing of files and dirs switched on, and all voice clips generated. This works fine after booting up, and still works fine during playback if I go to the file browser.
However, once the playlist has finished, file and dir names no longer speak, until I reboot the unit again.
Menu voicing is turned off, if that makes any difference.
This is with a CVS version from a couple of days ago CVS-060517, and many versions before that as well - not sure if it ever worked!

5415 | Bugs | Music playback | Very Low | Auto change directory, playback stops | 2006-05-22 | | 2006-06-03 | 2 |
Task Description
standard settings + “Auto-change directory = on”, “Repeat = off”. (cvs 2006-05-22 06:57) http://www.rockbox.org/dist/build-iaudiox5/ says “rockbox.zip 22-May-2006 09:00”
when playing the last file in a folder it jumps nicely to the first file of the next folder, but only plays like 2 min of that song then playback stops (for flac files, mp3s seems to play longer, sometimes even a few songs, but also eventually stops). to continue you can either skip to the next track or select a track from the filebrowser, but you can’t skip back to the beginning of the track it stops on. to me it seems like the codec-bar in “Info→Debug (Keep Out!)→View audio thread” ends up empty to early, also the “boost ratio” falls down and ends on 0% at the same time as the codec-bar turns empty and playback stops.

If I navigate to a menu, rather than the playback screen - the symptom stops Similarly if I use a theme - with no EQ on - then the stop / start continues Tried increasing jog buffer - no difference
