FS#11746 - Random freezes on Flash-based iPod Mini 1G

I get random freezes on a CF-modded iPod Mini 1G (see related subject in the Wiki). It seems to happen more often when the database is used (either when created, or simply read) but it may also happen during playback. It can happen after more than an hour, or much sooner (this morning I had two consecutive crashes after 3 seconds of playback).

I mainly ran daily builds, but now I’m using 3.7, which seems to hang less often.

I encounter 3 main problems:
- playback stops completely; the UI stays responsive (I can switch from menu to menu), but shutting down the player requires a hard reboot
- playback doesn’t stop, but I can only hear noise (this happens with Vorbis files mainly), same as above for the rest
- complete freeze: playback stops, the disk icon is on, but player is unresponsive - requires hard reboot.

When loading the DB to RAM and/or set to auto-update, these problems occurs more frequently. When creating a dynamic playlist from the file system, I don’t remember getting any problem (so it may not be related to the new Vorbis decoder).

The CF card is formatted to FAT32, was checked for errors and is functional using the original 1.4.3 Apple firmware.

I wonder if there isn’t a problem of memory corruption when using the database?

This is assumed fixed with r29476. The change has been merged to v3.8 branch as well and might be part of a 3.8.x version.

do a full scandisk on the drive, better yet reformat it and copy your music back… I was having the same problems and 100% sure it was filesystem problems

I can confirm the problem “- playback stops completely; the UI stays responsive (I can switch from menu to menu), but shutting down the player requires a hard reboot” for my iPod Mini 1G (unmodded).

The filesystem is checked with linux dosfsck (fsck.vfat) and reports no corruption. But I will recreate it and see if it helps.

Please try to delete the database files and re-create the DB.

This may be related to  FS#11865 .

Problem 1 (”playback stops completely; the UI stays responsive […]”) should be solved with r29081.
