FS#1177 - Playback Goes Silent

Periodically when playing MP3‘s directly (i.e. not
shuffling through a playlist) the box goes silent for about
30 seconds after the first 5 seconds of the song. The
timer continues to count and the boz responds to all
input, just no sound.

I don’t have an account, my email is

Does this still happen to you, using the latest daily build?

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2003-04-23 13:42

Model: JBR20101
ROM firmware: 1.28
Rockbox version: 2.0 and all daily builds up to 20030422

I used version 1.4 quite frequently for a few weeks without any
noteworthy problems (maybe a glitch here and there). But,
when I upgraded to 2.0 on April 15th, I started

experiencing this reported “silence”. It usually occurs about
2 or 3 minutes into the song. At that point, the song goes
silent for several seconds, and then the player skips

to the next song in my shuffled playlist. The first 30-45
seconds of the next song are silent, and then everything is
back to normal for a while and then the same sequence

of events repeats. This usually doesn’t start until I have
played 3 or 4 songs in my playlist. I have reverted to version
1.4, and I have no problems. I really want to upgrade

to 2.0 because of all of the nice, new features, but this
problem is a “show stopper.” Hope this helps. I still think
this is great development project. Thanks.

What bitrate are your MP3‘s? Does this happen on every file?
If not, can you provide a file that we can examine?

Model: JBR20101
ROM firmware: 1.28
Rockbox version: 2.0 and all daily builds up to 20030422
Mask: 0×0302 USB: positive
ATA: 0×200 PR: positive
Freq: 11.0592MHz

My MP3‘s are 128kpbs. No, this doesn’t happen on every
file. Yes, I can provide a file, but I can’t figure out how to do it
on this screen. However, if I select the file from its directory,
it plays fine (control). But, when the file is played while
shuffling my playlist of all files, it goes silent about 3 1/2
minutes into the song, and the first 30-45 seconds of the next
song are also silent (variable). Hence, it doesn’t seem to be
directly related to the file itself. It seems that it may be
related to the queueing and/or buffering logic.

New observations: It happens if skipping to the next or
previous song in the directory and/or playlist. Possibly only
on songs that have images? Testing that part out….

No dice on the image theory. Will definitely keep testing.
Definitely happens when skipping ahead or back, but not
always. Still no signe of a pattern in terms of file properties…

I’m having the same problem every day; perhaps my
experiences can help. I’m using version 2.0.

The problem seems to occur in response to a slight jostle or
bump, while moving. I’ve seen it happen on mp3s recorded at
a high bitrate, and relatively low ones; during shuffling or
direct play; on the first song i’m playing or well into a
directory of songs; with songs i ripped myself in OSX iTunes
or on a PC.

It seems as if there’s agreement that this is the same bug as
624001 (Loss of sound and play control) and 624697 (mp3
play stops mid-song) – if that’s indeed the case, note that
those guys report this happening while not moving at all. I
haven’t had that happen to me: i’ve always been moving
(walking, adjusting my carrying case, etc.) which seems to
have triggered the problem.

I’m happy to provide a demonstration if a developer is in the
NYC area. I’m pretty confident I can get it to freeze up –
again, this happens daily to me (I walk to and from work.)

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2003-10-07 23:02

I’m having an alternate problem to that bug : when I play
songs (not form a plylist, just a song from a file), I don’t have
no sound at all, though the sound display bar works and the
running time works. And that’s for ANY song, at ANY bitrate.
The rockbox 2.0 is installed on my Archos since August 2003.
Can someone help me ?
Thanks.

Get a recent daily build and install that. This was fixed after
2.0 was released.

I just installed the latest daily build and the issue still
occurs…

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2003-10-29 10:59

The error still occurs on my Studio20 too, with the last daily
build

Saw bug#820307 as being fixed, which sounded a lot like this
one so I installed the latest CVS. Unfortunately, the problem
did not go away… ;-(

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2004-01-28 04:42

OK, check this out: if this occurs on a file, hit “pause”, wait
for the Red LED to turn off and the disk spin down, then
hit “Back” to get to the beginning and the file will play
normally!

Go figure!

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2004-02-02 21:37

exactly the same pb
version 02-febr-2004

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2004-02-18 19:44

I have the exact same problem. Mine will play fine for the
first 2 hours then after that if I go to choose a file it plays
about 5 seconds then stops but the counter continues.
When it gets to the next some - 5 seconds again then
nothing. If I skip forward or back 5 seconds is played then
nothing.

If I charge it again it plays fine again for the first 2 hours
then does the same thing. These are brand new batteries
2100 mah. I have the 2.1 version of Rockbox.

Any help would be appreciated.

I’m have a similar silence problem with JBR20, Rockbox 2.2. It
seem 100% OK when playing in a fixed position at home, but
when used in my car it can happen anywhere in the song. But
if the same song is played again it is often OK. I think it’s
happening more when I drive faster and there are more
vibrations.
At first I thought it might be low batteries but it also happens
when fully charged with the car power adaptor connected.
Also I thought it might be related to the Archos remote, but
it also happens without this is not connected.

Is it any different with the latest daily build?
