FS#1367 - low recording quality from radio
I’m using an Archos 10 Recorder, with firmware 1.28 and
the newest Rockbox download.
I’ve only just started using the Recorder, so there may be
a really obvious answer to this, but…
I’ve been trying to record from radio (connected from the
headphone socket of a stereo into the ‘line-in- of the
Archos. It works fine, but the playback quality is very low
on playback. When I listen to the recording monitor
before starting to record, the quality seems perfect, but
it’s full of crackles when I playback. I was hoping to use
the Archos to record and keep songs off the radio, but it’s
not even close to good enough quality.
I wondered if the answer was that I should use a digital
line-in, but my stereo doesn’t have any lineout, let alone a
digital one.
Another question is about recording timers. I read
somewhere that you shouldn’t use the sleep timer (it
seemed to crash when I tried it…), but is there a clever
way round the problem? I want to record 2-hour shows
when I’m asleep, but I don’t want the Archos recording all
night…
Another question (are you getting sick of this yet?) is
about WAV files. My aim is to transfer the mp3s to my
computer, and change them into WAVs so I can edit them
in fine detail. I tried converting with Musicmatch, but the
quality seemed VERY bad. Maybe this is related to my
first problem.
Sorry that my query has dragged on longer than I meant it
to!
Tim

Hi Tim,
your problems are probably not Rockbox-related.
If you are unsure, try the same recording with the
original Archos firmware.
Some tips:
When you connect to the headphone socket of a radio
you wll not get optimal results. Still you should get OK
results.
Your problems could be the recording levels. As a personal
recommendation set the recording level to +6db, the
adjust the headphone soundlevel on the radio to that the
radio that it usually peaks in the -12/-6db area, not higher.
For overnight recording I suggest that you leave the
recording running all night with the mains connected.
There’s no problems with that. Then use the windows freeware
“mp3directcut” (search google for it) to cut out the show
you want to keep. Works great for me.
