FS#2043 - Battery status and charging (JR)
Adding to the list of observations around battery status
reporting and charging:
1. Charging problem
After playing for a few hours, battery at 34%, I plugged
in the charger. In 5 minutes the status went to 100%.
I booted the Archos 1.28 software, which spent another
4 hours to charge my battery to 100%
2. Status reporting and battery voltage
On another occasion, I noticed that the batt went down
from 64%, 5.08V to 56%, 5.10V in 10 minutes. Turned
the Archos off, and restarted it. Now battery shows
65% at 5.10V … what’s the algorithm?
observation 2:
5.45V = 100% 5.15V = 65%
observation 3:
5.54V = 84% 5.76V = 70%
5.81V = 80% 5.79V = 75%
observation 4:
after 1 hour batt charge still 100% at 5.54V, though
after restarting it and plugging in the power, Rockbox
started charging.
Conclusion, as observed and confirmed in the mailing list
threads, the algorithm for determining battery life and
level needs revising.
I just wanted to point out that CHARGING the battery to
its max, should not be overlooked.
Archos JR, CVS 040203
mask 0×0302 battery 1800mAh, deep:no, trickle: no
Kind regards, Martin.
(otherwise a very happy user. Keep up the good work)

You are correct, the battery status algorithm could be
better. However, don’t be fooled by the percentage. If it
says 100%, the battery is probably still not full. As long
as the battery icon is animated, Rockbox is still charging.
The battery status can’t be trusted as long as it is
charging. Let it charge until the icon stops animating.
As for the percentage dropping fast, that is normal too.
Different batteries have different discharge curves. The
battery status is only an estimate.
