FS#2634 - MOD/S3M/XM/IT tracker-based support

Support for Amiga ProTracker MOD, ScreamTracker
S3M, FastTracker 2 XM and Impulse Tracker IT file
formats would be very, very nice ;) . Since they are
tracker-based, they have very low (or low) CPU usage,
and the files are very small allowing lots of these in a
low-capacity player. Since they are “decoded” even
faster than OGG or MP3, every other additional “effects”
can be used.

I’d really like that to be implemented too.

A DUMB implementation would just be excellent (maybe with stereo recentering hability for listening old Amiga MODs with headphones).

I know so many people who would just LOVE to have a device which could replay tracker formats.

So, is tracker format support dead? I just patched my rockbox to play mods with a patch I found in flyspray, but without impulse tracker support we can’t play the godlike Within a Deep Forest soundtrack (http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/), and without screamtracker support we can’t listen to classic tunes like satellite one (http://modarchive.org/view-songinfo.php?action=inst&query=4993611aca1474535d6396e01f86cca8)

There is a patch for DUMB, but its a diff a against a very old version, and I don’t know if its feasible (or even desirable) to insert the changes by hand into the new code. I can do “Hello, world!” in C, but that’s about it…

Sorry if this is out of place here, but I couldn’t find any recent conversation on this topic and I was afraid that it fell off the devs’ radar.

Cheers to Rockbox for actually making these so-called “media players” useful (A feat in itself!), but this extra bit of functionality would push my Gigabeat into the realm of sheer perfection…!

I would also like to know what is going on with MOD/Tracker music support. I have a bunch of MODs that I would love to be able to play on my rockbox player, but the only way currently is to convert them to MP3 or OGG files, which is a bit of a pain.

I love tracker music and i think it is the responsibility of a hyper cool project like rockbox to allow me to play it on my iriver! MIDI support is already awesome to listen to weird MIDI versions of heavy metal songs, but tracker file support would make everybody’s jaw drop. If possible, also include a player for SID files.

To include DOOM, midi, madelbrot fractals, a gameboy emulator etc is already the bomb, please also give us MODs, XM and S3M support.

Like many people, having GB‘s of mods + portable player = even more joy.. Need I say more?

.mod :) Aye!

There’s a well working patching at FS #8680.
