FS#424 - Default contrast too dark

AJBR20 (upgraded to 40GB).

Installed Rockbox 1.4, replacing 1.3. The 1.4 logo
screen was too dark to read on first boot. By tipping the
unit at an extreme angle, I was able to navigate to the
contrast control and adjust until readable (setting=28).

The problem appears to be too much dynamic range -
the display is getting too light to read at 20, too dark at
34 - the original Archos firmware seems to limit the
adjustment to a “reasonable” range.

Reason for closing:  Wont Fix

The LCD’s are very different on different units. We have tried hard to have a
default that is at least visible on all models. I wonder what we are doing
wrong…

Same thing happened to me, only when i got the contrast
down i took it down to literally 0, and there are still freakish
dark lines running along the display - i took the batteries out
for half an hour and it fixed the problem only to return again
later. is my baby sick :( she’s 4 days old

Hmm… I posted the bug as I didn’t notice this problem with
RB1.3, so assumed that something must have changed.

Project Manager

We changed the default value in 1.4

Gotta Agree with the contrast being too dark.

Archos Jukebox Recorder 10.
Factory Firmware: 1.27b
Rockbox: 1.4

A good contrast setting for me is 28.

The units differ *A LOT* in contrast, so we can’t set a default value that
looks good for everyone.

Anonymous Submitter commented on 2002-11-27 10:19

Not a big problem. But having such a wide spread implies
that Archos must have a manufacturing setup procedure that
sets the contrast for each unit as it leaves the production
line…. expensive!

Project Manager

I think the HW info reveals the LCd type and what contrast should be the
default.

Or…our contrast settings function may be
wrong.

Please give me your results from Menu→Debug→Hw
Info.

From my AJBR20:

[Hardware Info]
ROM: 1.26
Mask: 0×0302 USB: positive
ATA: 0×200 PR: positive
Freq: 11.0592MHz

I also found the initial contrast way too dark. My current
setting is 27. The usable range is between 19 and 36 -
beyond those limits the display is completely unreadable.

I have a Recorder 20, ROM version 1.26
