FS#453 - Gaps between files on Rockbox
AJBR20, ROM 1.26, update 1.27c. Problem occurs on
Rockbox 1.4 and 1.3.
I recently posted a message on the Yahoo forum about
Gaps Between Tracks on my AJBR20 using Rockbox.
Before filing a bug report I have investigated the problem
further:
Using the ‘gapless’ setting on the WinLAME encoder
(and on some other encoders also I believe) there are a
series of leading zeros placed in the .MP3 file before the
first MPEG header. I don’t know why they are there, but
they make Rockbox pause between tracks (the SPDIF
stream is broken briefly as well). The stock Archos
firmware (1.27c) does not pause with these files, and nor
does WinAmp.
(Could ID3v2 tags placed at the front of the .mp3 files
also cause this problem?)
Attached are a series of small test-tone MP3 files that
display the problem. Details are:
BadTone1.mp3, BadTone1.mp2, BadTone3.mp3:
Encoded with WinLAME with ‘no gap’ set ON. Rockbox
pauses between these tracks. SPDIF stream is broken
between files. (Archos firmware plays these totally
seamlessly)
GoodTone1.mp3, GoodTone1.mp2, GoodTone3.mp3:
Encoded with WinLAME with ‘no gap’ set on. Edited in
a hex editor to remove the leading zeros.
Rockbox plays these totally seamlessly - SPDIF stream
is continuous through files.
Hope this helps you guys! (and I hope you can fix it )
Thanks again for all your hard work so far,
Brian. (brianm@screen.subtitling.com)

My hat is off for an excellent bug report. I’ll sink my teeth into it as soon as
possible.

Thanks again for the excellent report. It didn’t take me long to find
the bug, and it is now fixed in CVS.
