Would it be possible to add direct MP3 encoding when you are recording via the line-in?

It’s planned to be possible one day. In fact there’s a multi-codec recording architecture patch somewhere around here, though I doubt it compiles any more, without some updating.

The recording codecs feature is currently scheduled for inclusion in Rockbox 3.1.
