FS#5468 - Audio pauses on 60 gig ipod Photo

I am experiencing Audio pauses with my ipod Photo. They occur a few times a minute, or, in the case of some other files, perhaps (but not necessarily) incidentally, of a higher rate VBR encoding, every few seconds.

This is a new experience, I have been using rockbox for about a month, with an late march nightly build. This has not occured until the uploading the latest round of files for playback, and seems to be specific to certain files, which might suggest that it is either a disk access/fragmentation issue or an codec issue.

I have altered the following settings:

- switched the anti-skip buffer to 5s, 30s, 1min and 2min
- switched Disk spindown from the default to 20s, 30s, and up to 110s

Neither of these made any difference. I have also updated to the latest nightly build, with no change.

I have verified that the issue is specific to certain files on my ipod. I have not had the opportunity to see if removing all files and replacing them may resolve the issue (ie - disk fragmentation). The files I am experiencing this on are various flavours of mp3 - here are the stats for the all files I have verified so far:

96k CBR
213 VBR average

(It’s multiple files of each type. I have also played some 96k files without the drop outs, files that were added in the same batch that are having drop outs. It could be that I have no heard any drop outs in these other files yet, however.)

The VBR files behave much worse - the drop outs are every approximately 10 seconds, as opposed to once of twice a minute.

Thanks, this project has breathed life into my ipod, and made it useful again (till it just became, temporarily I hope, unlistenable). At least I can still play Doom on it :>

Reason for closing:  Duplicate

This is something pretty widely discussed in the forums. Did you change _anything_ else when you uploaded the new files? Like reverting or changing to a different while playing screen?

This will happen with a WPS that has peakmeters, but also sometimes when using cpu-consuming features such as EQ, crossfeed,…

Thanks for the comments. I do not beleive I switched to a different skin while playing the new files, but I did move from the Joltamp back to the default a short while ago (for some reason my preferences were being forgotten during some freezes/reboots and I got tired of switching it back).

It could very well be that the different WPS may be freezing when I would have missed it before, due to a less cpu intensive set of features.

Thanks again! I will now try playing the particular tracks that have caused problems in the past, but trying different themes, and will report back.

I will close this bug because there are many reports of it already.

Unfortunately codecs need optimizing, and iPod targets need much work to manage realtime playback with high bitrate files along with EQ, peakmeters and other CPU consuming activity.
