FS#6022 - "Delete Directory" is very slow

NOTE: topic changed from: “Delete Directory” causes Nano to hang

I am new to Rockbox so I hope I have filed this in the correct category. I have searched for previous reports but could not find any. Apologies if it has been reported before…..

I find that when I invoke the Delete Directory option, the Nano hangs completely. The display shows “Deleted” followed by the name of the directory. This happens whetehre or not there are files present in the directory.

The only way to restart it is to press Menu and Select together to reboot it.

On rebooting, the some of the files and/or sub-directories remain. Others have been deleted.

A related problem (I think!) - I keep the “Resume” setting switched on. If the deleted directory contained the file to be resumed, after rebooting the file name is shown as “nul!” (or something similar). I have usually been able to play a new file without problem, but on the last occasion, the Nano hung so completely that it would not restart. And on connecting to the PC, the drive would not connect and I had to reformat it. (a vey anxious 3 minutes!)

I\'ve updated the delete folder screen a bit s it looks more responsive. Not really anything else that can be don is there?

Sorry, forgot to state build. Build number is 060908

are you using tagcache? dircache?
were you playing anything while deleting? a file from the deleted directory? anything in your playlist is from that directory?

are you using tagcache? NO
dircache? NO
were you playing anything while deleting? a file from the deleted directory? NO - I generally use the Delete Directory after the end of the last file in the directory has finished playing.

anything in your playlist is from that directory? No playlists!

Hope this helps.

I have noticed this behavior, but I (without evidence) suspect that Rockbox is just taking a whole lot of time to delete stuff, and that it would come back if you waited long enough.

I agree. I have since found out that this is also what was happening on my Nano - I was just impatient, having been used to the lightning speed that the Delete Directory function worked on my Ondio. It is at least 20 times slower on the Nano.

So can I report that the bug is extremely slow Delete function.

I committed a change in delete directory that:
1) shows the subdir it is deleting in
2) allows you to press the usual abort key to stop the delete in progress.

I will change this bugreport into 'delete is slow' if that is ok with you
